North Korea 'only months away' from USA nuclear strike, claims diplomat

American disarmament envoy Robert Wood warned Kim Jong-un's weapons must be "completely, verifiably and irreversibly eliminated".

North Korean diplomat Ju Yong-chol accused the U.S. of deploying nuclear assets in the region in preparation for a preemptive strike.

North Korea accused the United States on Tuesday of seeking to aggravate the situation on the divided Korean peninsula by "deploying large nuclear assets" nearby and lay the ground for a possible pre-emptive strike against it.

"North Korea has accelerated its provocative pursuit of nuclear weapons and missile capabilities, and expressed explicit threats to use nuclear weapons against the United States and its allies in the region", USA disarmament ambassador Robert Wood told the Geneva forum.

North Korea is just "months away" from being able to strike the United States' mainland with a nuclear weapon, a US envoy said Tuesday.

Wood later told Reuters that he had "no new information to share" when questioned on the basis for his assessment of North Korea's missile technology. After raising concern to National Security Council officials over their consideration of a preemptive strike against North Korea, Cha wrote an op-ed for the Post claiming such an attack would "exacerbate" the "threat of proliferation".

North Korea tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile, the Hwasong-14, twice last July.

World leaders have also urged President Trump to avoid all-out war with the countries dictatorship, fearing that a nuclear missile crisis could result from the attack.

North Korea is under pressure over its continued weapons development programmes, though relations have warmed slightly as a North Korean delegation travels to the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"What I would call "the charm offensive" frankly is fooling no one", Wood said.
