Premier League UK live broadcasting rights update

Monday Morning Football

BT's package - for which it is paying UK£295 million (US$409.3 million) per season - includes the rights to 32 matches played on Saturdays at 12.30pm GMT - 20 second-pick matches and 12 fifth-pick matches.

This will set the firm back £3.579bn over three years, almost £200million less a season than they are paying now, or 16 per cent less a game.

"Their enthusiasm for the two remaining packages, which were created to appeal to streaming players, is apparently not as high as the Premier League had hoped, with the reserve prices reportedly not met".

In total BT and Sky bid £4.4bn to screen the lion's share of 200 games for each season between 2019-2022.

What is not known is whether the Australian rights which are now held by Optus, will return to Foxtel. As it stands the broadcaster will pay £9.3m per game, whereas in 2015 it paid about £11m per game.

BT Sport are said to be still in the hunt but Amazon's deep pockets could be the game-changer here, and over time perhaps in more way than one if it proved successful and ushered in a new approach to broadcast rights sales to match increasingly fragmenting audiences, even for football.

In December, Sky and BT signed a deal to sell their channels on each other's platforms.

A spokesperson for BT said the company "remained financially disciplined during this process and remains in a strong position to make a return on this investment through subscription, wholesale, commercial and advertising revenues".

The Premier League's inflationary bubble burst Tuesday when the $6 billion sale of British television rights produced a drop in the value of matches.

The deal will permit Sky to broadcast games on Fridays, Saturday tea-time, Sundays and Mondays.

It added that its customer base had more than doubled when it acquired EE. In the previous round, Sky faced an over 80 percent increase in price after BT entered the market with its own sports TV plans. The price means the Premier League's income from domestic rights is in line to fall for the first time since the competition began more than quarter of a century ago. League executives are confident of matching or beating the previous 2015-2019 TV rights deal of £5 billion.

Marc Allera, chief executive of BT's Consumer division, said: "The Premier League is a big part of our live sport line-up, which includes the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, the Emirates FA Cup, MotoGP, boxing, Aviva Premiership rugby and European Rugby Champions Cup".

Sky paid more last time to preserve its dominant payTV position in the United Kingdom against the serious competition of BT, which was bidding to establish its own subscription television service, to also support its commercial broadband ambitions.
