42% Of Non-Smoking Workers Want More Vacation Days

Smoking or non? Smokers, those who abstain disagree on workday impact

Halo, an e-cigarette manufacturer, surveyed 1,005 Americans, aged 19 to 73, to better understand how workers feel about the time their colleagues spend smoking.

Twenty-eight percent of smokers also felt that nonsmokers should be given three to five extra vacation days.

Nearly 75 percent percent of nonsmokers said smoke breaks are not fair, while more than 81 percent of smokers said smoke breaks are fair.

In all, 18.3 percent more nonsmokers suggested that those who do not take smoke breaks deserved at least one extra day of vacation. More than 60 percent of the smokers agreed.

Smoking where you work is a divisive topic, but research shows the average smoker wastes about six days a year on cigarette breaks.

Smokers in the finance and insurance industries, which are a big part of uptown Charlotte's workforce, were among the worst when it came to time wasted. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that smoking-related illnesses cost more than $156 billion in lost productivity each year in the USA and $5.6 billion of it is due to secondhand smoke exposure.

A company in Japan recently gave nonsmoking workers an extra six vacation days, USA Today reported.
