US House passes $1.3 trillion spending bill for fiscal year 2018 sends to Senate

UNITED States President Donald Trump says he has signed a $1.3 trillion spending bill into law Friday despite threats to veto the measure due to its lack of protections for undocumented immigrants who arrived in the USA as children and because it does not fully fund his proposed border wall.

Within hours Trump proved his veto threat was exactly that when he signed the spending bill at the White House, but Quinonez wasn't alone in calling bullshit on the way the president tried to frame the DACA issue in the context of the omnibus.

"We need to take care of our military", Trump said. There are a lot of things that I'm unhappy about in this bill. Most members of Congress did not have enough time to read the bill, ticking off conservative Republicans and Trump alike.

Signing of the bill was important to get the federal government running till September 30 this year.

The bill passed the House 256-167 and the Senate by 65-32.

Trump tweet threat, he said, was based on "the fact that the 800,000 DACA recipients have been totally abandoned" which he insisted was the work of Democrats, saying they were "not even mentioned in Bill".

At the signing, Trump claimed this part of the bill as a win, and suggested that funding fence fix is the same as funding his true dream project.

Republicans hold majorities in both the House and Senate, but there was not universal support in the party for the bill.

It also failed to resolve the stalemate over shielding young Dreamer immigrants from deportation after Mr Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programme a year ago. But Trump says the permitted work will begin "literally on Monday".

Trump, who sought to cancel DACA last fall, was seeking a deal that would give Democrats protections they sought for the programme's recipients in exchange for additional funding of US$25 billion for his long-promised US-Mexico border wall.

SNELL: You heard him say it there twice, that he.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Moments ago, the president did something that I don't think anyone saw coming when he threatened to veto this huge $1.3 trillion spending bill.

'I'm not gonna do it again.

It came hours after the Senate passed the $1.3trn spending package aimed at keeping the government open past midnight.

The House easily approved a bipartisan $1.3 trillion spending bill Thursday that pours huge sums into Pentagon programs and domestic initiatives ranging from building roads to combatting the nation's opioid abuse crisis, but left Congress in stalemate over shielding young Dreamer immigrants from deportation and curbing surging health insurance premiums.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had reached a deal with Trump for DACA legislation in return for the wall cash that month, but Trump later backed out of the agreement.

"Without the filibuster rule it'll happen just like magic", Trump said.

Asked about the president's tweet, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement: "The tweet stands for itself".
