Florida Gun Legislation Heads To Governor After State House Approves Bill

Students walked out of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School at 8:17 am to protest gun violence and demand new gun control laws

According to ABC News, the new piece of legislation will raise the age to purchase a gun to 21 from the previous age of 18 and also require a three-day waiting period for long guns. "Females between the ages of 18 and 21 pose a relatively slight risk of perpetrating a school shooting such as the one that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, or, for that matter, a violent crime of any kind".

Rick Scott signed a gun control bill on Friday (March 9) that aims to ensure school safety throughout the state.

The National Rifle Association has always supported measures to increase school security, fix our broken mental health system and keep firearms out of the hands of those with a risky mental illness.

Imposes a three-day waiting period on all gun sales.

Students from local schools have been following up on the bill calling it "a baby step".

Florida Governor Rick Scott on Friday signed into law a major gun-control and school safety legislation, three weeks after a high school shooting left 17 dead and 14 others injured in the traditionally gun-friendly southeastern USA state.

After the bill signing, United Airlines captain Tony Montalto, whose daughter, Gina Rose, died in the school shooting, read a statement on behalf of the victims' families. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said the same. "After multiple gun shots you would have to know where the shots were coming from", said the head of the Broward County Sheriff's Deputies Association Jeff Bell.

The national anthem's messages have recently been exposed as racist, with several high schools banning it entirely, and I believe its messages of freedom are just as outdated.

Scott received the $400 million bill Thursday following days of impassioned, often contentious debate in the majority-Republican House and Senate. Florida's teachers union and the National Rifle Association are opposed.

Scott has repeatedly said he doesn't support arming teachers and pushed lawmakers adopt his proposal, which called for at least one law enforcement officer in every school and one for every thousand students who attend a school. Such protocols are near-universal among USA law enforcement agencies. The group promptly filed a lawsuit to block the provision that raises the age to buy guns, arguing that it violates the Second Amendment. Florida's law unconstitutionally broadens those limits, the NRA says.

Scott initially pushed back on a provision arming teachers and as of Wednesday, refused to say whether he would sign the legislation. The governor can not veto individual items in the bill itself, but he does have line-item veto power with the budget.

Authorities in Florida are releasing the panicked 911 calls related last month's deadly school shooting as a gun-control bill sits on the governor's desk.

The Legislature did at the last minute agree to pass a bill created to battle the state's opioid epidemic.

According to CNN, Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow died in the most recent shooting said the bill may not be ideal, but it's better than nothing.

"My precious daughter Meadow's life was taken, and there's nothing I can do to change that, but make no mistake, I'm a father and I'm on a mission".

The worlds of those who knew those 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have been shattered and join a large contingent of shooting victims.

A Broward County grand jury on Wednesday charged the 19-year-old gunman with 17 counts of premeditated murder in the first degree and 17 counts of attempted murder in the first degree.

Cruz's attorneys have previously said he intends to plead guilty if prosecutors agree to pursue a life sentence rather than the death penalty.

Prosecutors have not announced a decision. "Oh my God. Oh my God", the mother says, raising her voice. Other school employees, however, are allowed to allowed to participate in the program. That contradicts a statement issued February 26 by his lawyer saying Peterson, who was assigned to the school, "believed that those gunshots were originating from outside any of the buildings on the school campus".
