New football league called Alliance of American Football is launching in 2019

Host cities of the league's eight teams are expected to be announced within the next three months, and teams will be composed of regional players. Ebersol also said that outside of the NFL, the AAF will have the highest-paid football players in North America. That financial backing is seemingly the catalyst to get the league up and running in less than a year with a 7-10 year long-term plan for success.

Forget the XFL, there is another pro football league coming in the offseason and it will start next year. Of the other games, one per week will feature on CBS Sports Network.

Polian says the rosters will be culled from players who were cut by NFL teams, undrafted players, players looking to return to football; and free agents from the CFL or elsewhere.

The new league will prioritize player safety and will not make use of the kickoff or the extra point, two NFL staples.

Led by some of the most respected football minds in the game, The Alliance of American Football is an eight-team, single-entity structured league driven by high-quality professional football and fueled by a dynamic Alliance between players, fans and the game.

The AAF, according to co-founder Ebersol - the son of former NBC executive Dick Ebersol, who'll serve on the new league's board - is focused on player safety, profit and fan participation. At the end of the film, McMahon and Dick Ebersol discussed "trying again" with the XFL, with McMahon saying "I'm sure we can find a way".

According to John Ourand of Sports Business Daily, the league is tweaking some traditional football rules - including the elimination of kickoffs. One thing that the Alliance of American Football has over the XFL is that they already have a TV and media deal. Teams will start with possession at their own 25-yard line. The play clock will be 30 seconds, not 45, as it is in the NFL. "As a member of the National Football League competition committee for a very long period of time, we often talked about, 'What if?' What if we had a blank canvas and could invent the game today, what would we do?"

As for different rules than the National Football League, the AAF will do away with kickoffs (and instead of an onside kick, a team will get one play to gain 10 yards from its 35-yard line to retain possession). "We have to be able to take advantage of the people who just stop playing fantasy when the National Football League season ends". It promises a new kind of broadcast, wrapping up games in two-and-a-half hours and without TV timeouts. Just four teams will compete in the playoffs. But at the end of the day, we are complementary to the NFL. The Alliance will provide players a comprehensive bonus system, post-football career planning as well as counseling and scholarship support for postsecondary education.
