Sri Lanka declares state of emergency after communal violence

The Police fired tear gas and later imposed a curfew as violence erupted in Kandy today

It is being told that due to the tension between Buddhists and Muslim communities over the past, conditions of Sri Lanka has worsened.

Sri Lankan government has declared a state of emergency in the country for seven days following violence against the minority community in Kandy district over the last two days.

The government said it was imposing the state of emergency after police failed to curb violence in Kandy, where mobs of Sinhalese burned mosques, homes and businesses belonging to Muslims.

The decision to declare emergency came a day after the eruption of clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka's central district of Kandy.

Speaking to journalists outside the President's Secretariat, where the Cabinet Meeting was held, Minister Dissanayake said a Gazette Notice in this regard would be issued right away.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also ordered an investigation into alleged police inaction in handling the clash.

Muslims make up about 10% of Sri Lanka's population, while the mainly Buddhist Sinhalese population constitute almost three-quarters of the island state's 21 million people.

That violence was instigated by a Buddhist extremist group whose leaders are on trial accused of spurring religious conflict. Mobs set fire to Muslim-owned businesses and attacked a mosque, and violence was reportedly spreading throughout the country, according to Al Jazeera. Buddhists make up about 70 percent and ethnic Tamils, most of whom are Hindus, about 13 percent.
