Trump asked witnesses about special counsel conversations

Donald Trump

President Donald Trump has had at least two conversations in recent months with key witnesses in the Russian Federation investigation, during which he asked them about matters they discussed with the special counsel Robert Mueller, The New York Times reported Wednesday. "I don't think it is fair to say that Donald Trump doesn't understand the role of the White House top lawyer", said Katyal.

The special counsel's investigation is now one of several probes looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether Trump campaign associates have any ties with Russians. Mr. McGahn acknowledged that that was true but said that he had told senior White House officials at the time that he was going to quit.

In another encounter, Trump reportedly grilled his former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus about how his interview with the Mueller team went and asked Priebus if the investigators had been "nice" to him, two people familiar with the conversation told the Times. But witnesses and lawyers who learned about the conversations viewed them as potentially a problem and shared them with Mueller.

The special counsel questioned witnesses recently about their interactions with the President since the investigation began.

A witness cooperating with Mueller has told investigators the meeting was set up in advance so that a representative of the Trump transition could meet with an emissary from Moscow to discuss future relations between the countries, according to the people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

- President Trump is upset with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders over her responses Wednesday regarding his alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, a source close to the White House tells CNN.

"It makes it look like you're cooking a story, and prosecutors are always looking out for it", said Julie R. O'Sullivan, a law professor at Georgetown University.

The President said he had never ordered McGahn to fire the special counsel. Lawyers for the president have not responded to ABC News. "This was an obviously inadvisable move by the president, even if it didn't cross over to obstruction of justice", former Justice Department spokesman Matt Miller tells me. Bernie Nussbaum, who served as Bill Clinton's first general counsel, came under fire for what his critics decried as putting the president's personal legal needs ahead of the office of the presidency as the Clinton White House grappled with the Whitewater scandal.
