Walkie-talkie fury spares Aussie coach Darren Lehmann in ball-tampering scandal

Vice-captain David Warner was one of the leadership group who decided to cheat in the test against South Africa

Smith, Warner and Bancroft will now return home to face a disappointed and angry Australian public, missing out on the rest of the season and the lucrative 2018 Indian Premier League season. "So we've got to make sure we're respecting the game, its traditions, and understanding [how] the game holds itself around the world". "The team has been seen quite negatively in recent times and there is a need for us to change some of the philosophies about the way we play".

Smith and Warner will not be available for Australia until April next year, while Bancroft's nine-month ban will last until early 2019.

Cricket Australia, however, is expected to officially confirm the announcement of their penalties later today.

"If we take a leaf out of someone, like say New Zealand's book", Lehmann said.

Lehmann was cleared of any knowledge of the ball-tampering plan, which was masterminded by Warner and carried out by Cameron Bancroft, according to Cricket Australia's inquiry.

Further, and most damningly, it was concluded that he provided "advice to a junior player regarding how a ball could be artificially altered including demonstrating how it could be done".

Voges, who is now commentating in South Africa, said he had been in contact with some members of the Australian team who were "struggling" with the saga.

The three will be allowed to play club cricket and were encouraged by CA to do so "to maintain links with the cricket community". They were found to have breached Article 2.3.5 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to conduct at any time that is contrary to the spirit of the game, unbecoming of a representative, harmful to the interests of the game, or bringing the game into disrepute.

Responding to suggestions that Australia might have attempted to manipulate the ball in other matches, Sutherland said he hoped the incident was a one-off.

Smith, who was part of the "leadership group", admitted to charges of ball tampering, which took place during the third Test match in Cape Town, and stood down from captaining the side in the remaining days of the same Test.

"Steve Smith, I think, is a good guy who made a huge mistake", he tweeted.

Their opposing captain in this series, South Africa's Faf du Plessis, has been charged with the offence twice, and opening bowler Vernon Philander once. We need to change how we play and within the boundaries we play.

In its editorial headlined "Sandpaper, lies and videotape", The Age writes: "The twists and turns have just kept coming in Australia's ball-tampering disgrace in South Africa with Cricket Australia admitting it was sandpaper and not tape that was used and that David Warner had been the architect, even instructing Cameron Bancroft how to cheat". He needed punishing but I think this is too harsh.

Throughout his 15-minute long media briefing, Lehmann stressed on ensuring his players are not too mentally scarred by the episode.

Vice-captain David Warner has also been banished from the tour.

Sutherland apologized during a press conference, on behalf of the organization, to both Australia and South Africa.

"I would like to apologise to the Australian public and the cricket family".
