At Sylvester Stallone's urging, Trump weighs 'full pardon' for boxer Jack Johnson

Donald Trump Considers Posthumous Pardon for Boxer Jack Johnson

President Donald Trump is considering a pardon for the first black heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Johnson, after speaking with Sylvester Stallone. Four years later, he was arrested for violating the Mann Act, which disallowed someone from transporting a woman across state lines for "immoral purposes".

"Sylvester Stallone referred to as me with the story of heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson", the president tweeted Saturday.

"[Johnson's] trials and tribulations were great, his life complex and controversial", Trump tweeted.

Mr Trump said: "Others have looked at this over the years, most thought it would be done, but yes, I am considering a Full Pardon!".

He died in a auto wreck in 1946. A 2004 Ken Burns documentary, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, was acclaimed.

At 6ft (1.82 meters) in height and weighing over 200 pounds (91 kg), Jack Johnson, known as the Galveston Giant, pummeled his way past Jim Crow-era barriers to win the heavyweight boxing title in 1908. Supporters have included Arizona Senator John McCain and former Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid; however, Barack Obama, the first black president, did not act on it.

Johnson didn't serve his prison sentence until 1920 because he left the country following his conviction.

Johnson would flee to Europe while free on appeal and spend years fighting overseas.

McCain previously told The Associated Press that Johnson "was a boxing legend and pioneer whose career and reputation were ruined by a racially charged conviction more than a century ago". He died in 1946. This year, McCain; Sen.

Campaigns for posthumous pardons have been in motion since the turn of the century, but have not found much success.

"Jack Johnson is a boxing and pioneer whose reputation was wrongly tarnished by a racially motivated conviction more than a century ago,"McCain said a year ago".

In 2016, a group of congressmen - including Sen. The group sent a letter to the White House asking for a posthumous pardon to honor the 70th anniversary of Johnson's death. "Regardless of this decision passing each chambers of Congress a number of occasions lately, no pardon has been issued up to now". Cory Booker, D-N.J.; and Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., reintroduced legislation urging a posthumous pardon. "I hope President Trump will seize the chance earlier than him to proper this historic flawed and restore a terrific athlete's legacy".
