Germany: VW to buy back cars if cities impose diesel bans

Market tapping VW Atlas Tanoak concept revealed at NYIAS 2018

In response to this ruling, Volkswagen has said that it would buy back cars from customers if cities impose such a ban on diesel cars.

The dirt patch in the Mojave desert is one of 37 facilities across the country that are being used by the automaker to hold almost 300,000 cars that need to be updated to meet emissions standards before they can be resold, according to Reuters.

This is just one of 37 storage areas the firm has around the United States, housing nearly 300,000 vehicles.

A VW spokesman said the vehicles are being stored temporarily and routinely maintained so they can be re-sold or exported once regulators approve emissions modifications. And now it's waiting for USA regulators to approve emissions modifications for the stored vehicles so it can either re-sell them or export them.

The court filing said through December 31 Volkswagen had reacquired 335,000 diesel vehicles, resold 13,000 and destroyed about 28,000 vehicles.

Since the manufacturer first launched the scheme back in August of previous year, around 120,000 older, polluting diesel cars were removed from the roads. (Reuters/Lucy Nicholson) Volkswagen AG has paid more than $7.4 billion to buy back about 350,000 vehicles.

But it's not over as a headache for VW, with the buy-backs expected to last until the end of 2019, and the need to store the equivalent of Volkswagen's entire USA sales in 2017 not likely to end much sooner.

VW must buy back or fix 85 percent of the vehicles involved by June 2019 or face higher payments for emissions.

It said in February it had repaired or fixed nearly 83% of covered vehicles, and expected to hit the requirement soon.

The company admitted in September 2015 that it had circumvented the emissions control system in the U.S. for diesel vehicles sold since 2009.

In April 2017 Volkswagen was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to three felony counts and paid $4.3 billion in federal penalties.
