Hungary's slide into autocracy to continue after Orbán's victory

Hungary elections Prime Minister Viktor Orban declades victory

Orban has projected himself as a saviour of Hungary's Christian culture against Muslim migration into Europe, an image which resonated with more than 2.5 million voters, especially in rural areas. Not only did he win with almost three-quarters of the vote, but his party should be left with a supermajority in Parliament, giving them the ability to enact changes to their constitution and basically write their own ticket for the next few years.

All NGOs in Hungary that advocate open borders and a liberal approach toward migration might be potentially banned starting from May, Janos Halasz, a Fidesz spokesman said on Monday, cited by the state news agency MTI.

Orban's government has already attracted controversy for what critics call its erosion of media and judicial independence, as well as its crackdown on civil society organisations, in particular those linked to liberal Hungarian-born U.S. billionaire George Soros.

The laws would force the NGOs working with migrants and asylum seekers to get government permits; income received from overseas would be taxed; advocacy groups could be banned from going closer than 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Hungary's borders, where asylum-seekers file claims; and foreigners without authorization to help refugees could be banned from Hungary.

In 2015, Hungary built a fence along its borders with Serbia and Croatia to stop illegal migrants.

Orban, who won a third consecutive parliamentary supermajority, has used the past eight years to extend his influence over the media as part of an unprecedented centralization of power despite European Union objections.

Soros has rejected the government campaign against him as "distortions and lies" meant to create a false external enemy.

One of Orban's most defining characteristics is his passion to safeguard Hungary's sovereignty against any kind of "foreign encroachment" and that has helped him overrule any possible challenges growing against him - even within his Fidesz Party. "President Juncker and the Commission feel that defending these principles and defending these values is the common duty of all member states with no exception".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated Orban and called for cooperation on divisive issues, her spokesman Steffen Seibert told a news conference.

"It's very clear that there are controversial topics in our cooperation", Steffen Seibert told reporters in Berlin on Monday, flagging disagreement especially over Hungary's response to the refugee crisis and its refusal to accept an European Union system to distribute migrants.

French far-right politician Marine Le Pen, described the result on Twitter as a "great and clear victory" and said that "nationalists could soon be in the majority in Europe". Poland's deputy foreign minister and envoy to the EU, Konrad Szymanski, hailed his victory as "a confirmation of Central Europe's emancipation policy". The far-right Jobbik Party, which came second in the election and claimed 24 parliament seats, is "a good example" of Fidesz's superiority, the commentator added.

"I am depressed. I thought they would win by a majority, but the two thirds majority is surprising for me". "This is terrifyingly serious". Victory in this election will allow him to lead the government for the fourth time.

The holder of the EU's rotating presidency, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, also appealed for Hungary's cooperation.

That "constricted the space for genuine political debate, hindering voters' ability to make a fully informed choice", the OSCE said.

Fidesz' victory also highlighted the divide between the deeply conservative and more religious countryside and the cultured urban class in Budapest. Driven by an unbridled anti-refugee campaign, he outperformed his own party's stated expectation and shattered hopes of a potential upset among the fractured opposition, which has decried his government's authoritarian tilt.
