Starbucks to Close for Racial-Bias Training

Close for racism

The world's biggest coffee company Starbucks will be closing more than 8,000 company-owned stores in the United States on the afternoon of May 29 to conduct racial-bias education, geared towards preventing discrimination within its stores.

To combat this situation, Starbucks Corp is planning to close down 8,000 company-owned U.S. cafes for the afternoon on May 29.

The announcement from the Seattle-based food and beverage chain comes amid a growing backlash against the company as the news of the arrest of two African-American men at a Philadelphia store on April 12 spreads.

Starbucks' feet were hotter than its own coffee after the men refused to vacate the premises after the White employee demanded they exit immediately. Mayor Jim Kenney said the commission would "review the firm's policies, guidelines and procedures, including whether Starbucks has written policies, whether the policies are enforced uniformly, and how much discretion is left to individual employees".

A manager called police after the men declined to leave the premises because, they said, they were waiting for an acquaintance. However, no charges have been filed.

According to Schultz, Starbucks has called in people including Sherrilyn Ifill from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative to help guide the company in its efforts to reduce unconscious bias.

Philadelphia police released a recording of the call from the Starbucks employee that led to the arrests.

"While this is not limited to Starbucks, we're committed to being a part of the solution", he said.

A video taken after police arrived shows officers talking with two black men seated at a table. Jackson said he'd like to see the chain and other national companies take broader steps to combat inequality.

"She recognizes that perhaps that call should not have been made", he said.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident and the outcome in our store on Thursday were reprehensible. they were wrong", Johnson told ABC's Good Morning America on Monday, amid protests and calls for a boycott on social media. Authorities also released dispatch and officer communications. CEO Kevin Johnson issued a public apology and met with the two men, who were detained but ultimately not charged.
