Amazon Echo secretly sent family's private audio to some random person

She said the family unplugged the devices and contacted Amazon after they learned the recording had been sent

As reported by a Seattle-based television station KIRO, Alexa, the digital assistant on Echo devices recorded a private conversation between a woman named Danielle and her husband. (The caller confirmed the couple whether they were talking about Hardwood floorings after listening to the received audio files in which hardwood floorings were mentioned).

In its statement, the U.S. tech giant said the conversation had been inadvertently recorded and sent because the Echo device interpreted a word in the background conversation as "Alexa" - a command that triggers recording.

The company said: "Echo woke up due to a word in background conversation sounding like "Alexa" [the default trigger for the device]".

Well, that's quite a turn of events, something even Amazon admits, continuing: "As unlikely as this string of events is, we are evaluating options to make this case even less likely".

"I felt invaded", a family member called Danielle said.

The Portland couple used Amazon's voice-activated devices throughout their home to control heat, lights and security. At which point, the background conversation was interpreted as a name in the customers contact list.

To play an audiobook in your library, just say: "Alexa, read ..."

Hours after the report came out, Amazon acknowledged that was a sort of glitch with this particular Echo Dot speaker and that Alexa misunderstood the conversation as a command.

"I'm never plugging that device in again, because I can't trust it", she stressed.

Danielle explained her whole house was wired with Amazon devices, something not uncommon for fans of the Alexa units.

ALEXA is showing even more erratic behaviour.

'A husband and wife in the privacy of their home have conversations that they're not expecting to be sent to someone [in] their address book, ' she told KIRO. During the conversation between Danielle and her husband, Alexa mistakenly heard the request to "send message". "You are being hacked", is what the caller told Danielle and her husband, who have an Amazon Echo speaker in their home. While the woman says that Amazon apologized profusely for the error, she also claims that the company had yet to offer an explanation for the privacy breach. We investigated what happened and determined this was an extremely rare occurrence. In April, Amazon's smart assistant Echo was revealed to contain a coding error that made it easy for hackers to listen in on users' private conversations. But if you want to make sure this doesn't happen to you, then simply avoid sending any kind of messages over Alexa.
