Iranian President Snubs US' List Of Demands For New Nuclear Deal

Mike Pompeo Threatens to Impose the 'Strongest Sanctions in History' on Iran

Measures outlined by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, he said, showed the U.S. was a prisoner of its "failed policies" and it would suffer the consequences.

Member of the National Security Council and the Foreign Policy Committee at the Iranian Parliament, MP Hashmatullah Flahat Bisha, compared the current US stance with that of former US President Georges W. Bush.

Zarif wrote: "It repeats the same wrong choices and will thus reap the same ill rewards".

He said Iran was continuing negotiations with the European Union on issues related to the nuclear agreement, implicitly denying that the three countries discussed with Iran its regional threats and the development of ballistic missiles.

The Iranian ILNA news site also carried a statement on Monday from the foreign ministry in Tehran, which said Pompeo's remarks revealed the "poor intelligence, weak oversight, analytical backwardness and confusion in decision-making processes in the United States".

In a speech on Monday from Washington, Pompeo listed several demands that would be included in an updated nuclear treaty with Tehran.

His Iranian counterpart said the USA was a prisoner of its "failed policies" and would suffer the consequences.

Pompeo warned that the new sanctions on Iran will be the "strongest sanctions in history".

Sanctions would be lifted, Pompeo said, only when Iran withdraws its forces from Syria, ends support for Houthi rebels in Yemen, and disarms Shia militias in Iraq. "We call on the entire worldwide community to join this American position", Netanyahu added.

Iran responded to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's speech which set conditions for the Muslim country that, if not met, would subject Iran to harsh sanctions.

Pompeo's sharp rhetoric follows Trump's decision earlier this month to walk out of - or violate, depending on your point of view - the 2015 Iran deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which had put strict and verifiable limits on Iran's nuclear programme.

Kowsari said that the Iranian people back Soleimani. Russia, China and India are unlikely to bow to United States pressure.

"Pompeo has not outlined a strategy, but rather a grab bag of wishful thinking that can only be interpreted as a call for regime change in Iran", Suzanne Maloney of the Brookings' Centre for Middle East Policy wrote on Twitter.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded that Iran halt all uranium enrichment, stop its ballistic-missile program and give nuclear inspectors access to the entire country, in a speech detailing the US approach now that President Donald Trump has withdrawn from the 2015 nuclear deal.

President Donald Trump's new, more aggressive strategy toward Iran depends on getting help from USA partners - the very allies he spurned in withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear accord with Tehran. He says the Trump administration prefers for it to be a treaty that is ratified by Congress.

Others anxious that Pompeo was forcing Iran into a corner, one likely to raise tensions in the region. He says Iran must "stop enrichment" of uranium and never preprocess plutonium.

First and foremost, it is highly crucial for Iran that the Europeans keep buying oil from the country - now around 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) or roughly 40% of overall Iranian oil exports.

Consequently, Trump's misguided decision to move the United States out of the JCPOA and increase pressure and sanctions on Iran could end up having disastrous consequences not only for Iran and its people, but also the already turbulent Middle East.

Separately, Iran's government spokesman said that the plan outlined by Pompeo would exacerbate the public's hostility to the United States.

In negotiating the Iran deal, the Obama administration also started with a long list of demands.

Pompeo said the USA will monitor Tehran's regional activities, restrict its influence in the Middle East and ensure that it never acquires a nuclear weapon.

Echoing Maloney's assessment of Pompeo's newly unveiled "Plan B" for nuclear negotiations-which comes around two weeks after President Donald Trump violated the Iran nuclear accord and placed the US on the path to yet another war in the Middle East-National Iranian American Council (NIAC) president Trita Parsi arguedthat the Trump administration's demands are intentionally unrealistic and "clearly created to ensure there can not be any new negotiation".

Pompeo will present the approach during a speech Monday at the conservative Heritage Foundation.
