The Senate Passes Legislation to Save Net Neutrality

Opinion What Does the End of Net Neutrality Mean for Cryptocurrency John Mc Mahon

Senate Democrats - and a handful of Republicans - voted to overturn the FCC's net neutrality repeal yesterday, a move they say is the first step to ensuring an open internet, though the bill's prospects are unclear. "The only studies that support their claims are studies that they have funded themselves", Greer said.

"We want a free and open Internet", Pai said. But he concedes that Democrats have done a better job of selling their message to voters. She was the last to vote after taking her time on the Senate floor, entertaining lobbying by Sen.

"Until such time that real "Net Neutrality" legislation becomes law, customers of ISPs, particularly smaller ISPs, can rest assured they will be able to reach lawful Internet content of their choice and won't find their access blocked, degraded, or otherwise inhibited", ACA added.

The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to save net neutrality rules established by the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) 2015 Open Internet Order (the full history of net neutrality is much more complicated), which were set to end in June following a December repeal by the agency, Business Insider reports.

Today's settlement was concluded with a vote of 52-47 in favour of altering Net Neutrality protections.

Republican Senator John Thune, who chairs the Commerce Committee, said "the fact of the matter is nothing is going to change" after the new rules take effect - and will not prod people to vote. But in addition to to the 49 Democrats, Republican Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and John Kennedy also voted in favor of the measure. Senate Democrats believe their resolution - getting every Democrat on record in support of net neutrality and most Republicans on record against it - can turn what was once considered a wonk issue into a wedge issue this November.

Neither tipped a hand until they voted a few hours earlier Wednesday to move the measure past a procedural hurdle. As expected, Republican Senator Susan Collins of ME also voted in favor of net neutrality.

While the majority of Democrats are for retaining net neutrality and Republicans err more towards repealing the rules, the issue is not totally clear-cut across party lines and general consumer sentiment in the states is also moving against the FCC.

Despite the Senate's passing of the resolution, the measure is unlikely to be enacted. He said that instead lawmakers should write legislation "that would safeguard consumers but still prevent regulators from stifling innovation". Telecommunications companies oppose the regulations.

In a return to form following weeks of lagging ratings, government reality show The FCC returned to a familiar topic last night - net neutrality - and reaped the benefits. Democrats think the fight to restore the rules could be a political victor during November's congressional midterm elections even if the effort is unsuccessful, as it will force Republicans to record a vote against reinstating the rules.
