First lady Melania Trump making second visit to border detention facility

Under Obama if children crossed the border with their parents they were only separated if officials suspected the adult of human trafficking smuggling posing a national security risk or when their parenthood could not be verified

She is expected to visit centers housing immigrants apprehended at the border.

Trump's spokeswoman declined to immediately release details about her planned stops. On Thursday she wore a black sweater and white trousers as she boarded a government plane in Washington, with no visible writing on either garment.

Myra Gutin, a professor at Rider University in New Jersey who studies first ladies, says that the aims of Trump's advocacy - and the extent to which they differ from her husband's - seem opaque.

Protesters greeted first lady Melania Trump in Phoenix on Thursday with a giant balloon mocking her husband. On camera a Customs and Border Patrol agent told the First Lady "there have to be consequences" for those families attempting to enter the US, often to seek asylum.

During her visit to Tucson on Thursday, she said her interest in the roiling immigration issue centers on the children caught up in the system.

Mrs. Trump made the trip in a risk-averse ensemble of a black sweater and white slacks.

The agency would continue to refer single adults for prosecution for illegally crossing the border, said the CBP chief, adding that border agents would also separate children from adults if the child was in danger or if the adult had a criminal record.

After a round-table discussion, during which the first lady heard from officials who work along the border, the first lady was given a tour of the US Customs and Border Protection Facility in Tucson.

Asked whether the first lady agrees with her husband's polices, Ms Grisham said: "She definitely believes in strong border laws" and wants Congress to strengthen immigration policies.

As it was previously reported, Melania visited immigrant children on the border of the United States and Mexico following the migrant crisis whereby the policies enacted by Trump's administration led to the separation of children from their parents. A judge has ruled that the youngest children must be returned to their parents within the next 15 days and all children reunited within a month, but some reports indicate that there is widespread confusion about where children are being held and what processes are in place to return them to their parents.

More than 2,300 children have been separated from their parents at the border in recent weeks and some were placed in government-contracted shelters hundreds of miles away from their parents.
