Kim Jong-un lands in Singapore for U.S. summit

North Korea's state media said on Monday (June 11) that its leader Kim Jong Un and United States President Donald Trump will discuss a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism" on the Korean peninsula, denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern.

The official media had reported that the two leaders plan to meet, but offered few specifics, including where and when. It heralded the summit as part of a "changed era".

South Korea's presidential Blue House said Sunday that it expects a positive outcome from the upcoming summit between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.

In a tweet ahead of the meetings this morning, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington remained "committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Occasional provocations by the North have continued while Pyongyang has made increasing advances in its nuclear arsenal, which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a U.S. invasion. "We can not take sanctions off", Trump said.

A USA official said Monday that Trump and Kim will first meet one on one with translators in a session that could last up to two hours before they open the meeting to their respective advisers.

Before heading to the Shangri-La Hotel, Trump was asked how he felt about the summit, and answered "very good".

Despite an enormous level of excitement amongst the general population both on the ground in Singapore and across the world at the prospect for nuclear disarmament and an end to the war between North and South Korea, expectations have been tempered by those involved.

They were given a "stern warning" before being expelled on Saturday, police said in a statement soon after North Korean leader Kim landed in the city-state.

Kim was greeted at Singapore's Changi airport by Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan.

The summit, the US-DPRK will be held on June 12 at the Capella hotel on Sentosa island.

The U.S. president has called it a "one-time shot" at peace. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. This has included backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

Sung Kim, who served as USA ambassador to South Korea and chief nuclear negotiator, led the US delegation, and met DPRK Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui.

Despite the high stakes for the meeting, Trump has said that he would know within seconds of the start of the talks whether Kim was serious about abandoning nuclear weapons.

The official said Trump and Kim would hold a one-on-one meeting on Tuesday that could last up to two hours.
