Serbia FA president investigated by Federation Internationale de Football Association over BBC interview

StoriesWorld Cup day nine the things you might have missed

Maybe there were situations like this, like the one [between Serbia and Switzerland], where the referee should have made a decision to at least see it, but it's in their hands.

Federation Internationale de Football Association rules prohibit political symbols in stadiums and the three players could have been banned.

Xhaka, whose brother plays for Albania, ran to the touchline and locked his thumbs together with fingers outstretched to make what looks like the double-headed eagle on Albania's flag.

Kosovo is a former Serbian province whose 2008 declaration of independence is not recognized by Serbia, leading to ongoing friction between the Balkan neighbours.

"In relation to the same match, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the President of the Serbian FA Slavisa Kokeza as well as the national coach Mladen Krstajic for statements made in the aftermath of the said match". With one group game remaining, they will not want to be without three of their key players.

Krstajic reacted to the defeat by calling for the match referee, Felix Brych of Germany, to be put on trial in a war crimes tribunal in the Hague for failing to award Serbia a penalty.

The Serbian press meanwhile called Shaqiri's goal celebration "shameful provocation".

Brazil and Switzerland both have 4 points, with the latter playing against Costa Rica, who have collected no points thus far.

Xhaka was born in Switzerland, but his ethnic-Albanian parents came from the Serbian city of Kursumlija, where his father was jailed by Yugoslavian authorities in the 1980s for participating in anticommunist demonstrations as a student in the Kosovar capital, Pristina. Both players defended the celebrations as spontaneous and personal outpourings at moments of high-emotion, which may seem plausible given their opponent in Friday's match. Shaqiri was more terse: "I do not play politics, I play football", he said.

"It's good to be a fan and important to show respect", Petkovic said.

The build-up to the match had seen exchanges between Serbian players and Shaqiri, who wears boots with the Kosovo flag displayed on one heel and the Swiss one on the other. "It was a wonderful atmosphere and that's what support should be about".
