South Korea 2-0 Germany

Heung-min Son

It is the first time since 1938 that a German side - including West Germany as they were previously called - has not advanced beyond the first stage of the World Cup tournament.

"All I can say is thank you to our fans who always support us".

"It's too soon for me to answer, it will take a few hours to see things clearly, the disappointment is very deep in me", said 58-year Loew when asked if he would resign.

"I think that all of us weren't up for it and did not have the absolute will to show that we wanted to tear something down here at the World Cup", Neuer said.

To qualify for the knockout stage, Germany needed to win by two or more goals or better Sweden's result against Mexico in the other Group F game being played at the same time. It ended with Mexican fans storming the South Korean embassy in Mexico City to sing, dance and force the consul to drink tequila, it brought acclaim to Seoul from around the world and brought despair to Germany.

Low, however, was adamant the future of German football is still bright, especially going by their results since the 2006 World Cup and their current youth prospects.

"We did not deserve to be winning the title once again", Loew said.

And the Arsenal midfielder clashed with a fan as he left the pitch after Germany were beaten by South Korea.

Germany urgency was not matched by their normal efficiency and soon legs started to tire. South Korea knocked out defending champ Germany in a 2-0 match on Wednesday.

The South Koreans tried to take the initiative from the very beginning, but the Germans, as the stronger side, soon took control and pressed high.

Germany had made it to the quarterfinals at the past nine World Cups, and reached at least to the semifinals at every tournament since 2002.

But South Korea would score twice in injury time, first through Kim Young-gwon and then Son Heung-min when Germany and Manuel Neuer pushed for a way back. Initially flagged offside, the goal has finally been allowed after a VAR review.

The normally rock solid Neuer spilled a free kick in the first half but his counterpart, Jo Hyeon-woo, didn't put a foot wrong.

"I really prayed and prayed for it to be a goal", said the defender, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

The Tottenham forward also lashed a volley wide when it was goalless, before being booked in the second half as referee Mark Geiger thought he had dived in an attempt to win a penalty. We believed until the end today, even when it was 0-1.
