Trump issues warning to trade partners over retaliatory tariffs

Trump shook the hands of a long line of people who greeted him but saved the peck for the Ambassador

Exiting a world summit with characteristic bravado, President Donald Trump delivered a stark warning Saturday to America's trading partners not to counter his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The weekend meeting marked the first time other countries began employing new way of dealing with Trump in person, pushing back on his declarations and threats and trying to illustrate the damage he was doing to the US economy.

Speaking from China where Putin was attending a regional security summit, Peskov said that in their last telephone conversation on March 20 the Russian and USA leaders had also mentioned possibly meeting in Vienna.

The summit host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, kicked things off without waiting for those he described as "stragglers" to arrive.

'I will be on a mission of peace and will carry in my heart the hearts of millions of people, all over the world, ' he said before his journey.

The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by a tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with US trading partners furious over Mr. Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda. But short of that, he also pledged the USA would raise its own trade barriers to combat unfair trade practices around the world.

But tensions had already been seething over trade after the Trump administration confirmed on May 31 it would apply additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and European Union countries, ending a two-month exemption period.

"If they retaliate they're making a mistake ..."

German Chancellor Angela Merkels office released a photograph as Trump left the summit Saturday that showed her locked in an exchange with Trump: He is seated, arms folded, wearing an inscrutable expression.

"They understand that. They know it".

European leaders also say Russia's return to the G7 can not happen unless substantial progress is made to resolve "problems" in Ukraine, thus rejecting Donald Trump's call to reinstate Russian Federation to the group. "I think it would be an asset to have Russian Federation back in".

Trump pulled out of President Barack Obama's landmark nuclear accord with Iran over the objections of European allies.

His early departure from the G7 meant he will miss sessions on climate change and the environment.

G7 participants were also angered by Trump's stance on climate climate - a key issue on the group's agenda.

Yesterday, Macron tweeted, "The American president may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a six-country agreement, if need be".

It was a wide-ranging news conference that Trump also used to lambast what he called "ridiculous and unacceptable" tariffs on American goods around the world, threatening to end all trade with his G7 counterparts if they didn't right what he considers unfair trade practices.

In public, Trump bantered easily with his fellow leaders, but the meeting came at a tense moment in the relationships, with allies steaming over Trump's new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron appeared to indicate room for negotiation ahead of a delayed meeting with Trump, telling reporters "Sometimes we disagree". "So we are going in with a really positive spirit". A little bit accurate, perhaps. We have a tremendous trade imbalance.

"After calling out Trudeau and Macron before the summit, he took a different approach on Saturday, "[congratulating] he leaders of other countries for crazily being able to make these trade deals that were so good for their countries and bad for the United States" and chastising his predecessors for allowing the U.S.to be taken advantage of.
