Basketball Australia Boomers leaving Philippines after brawl

FIBA Gilas Group B set up for explosive finish

Milwaukee Bucks center Thon Maker was one of 13 players ejected after a insane brawl broke out during a FIBA qualifier between Australia and the Philippines, Monday.

Maker was one of four Australian players to be ejected following the fight, which saw the third quarter play out with only three Philippines players remaining in the game.

Philippine and Australian players engage in a brawl during their FIBA World Cup Asian qualifier game at the Philippine arena in Bocaue town, Bulacan province, north of Manila on July 2, 2018.

FIBA confirmed that disciplinary actions were now proceeding against both teams, with decisions expected in the next couple days.

A largescale brawl broke out during a FIBA World Cup qualifier between Australia and the Philippines on Monday.

Speaking to Sky News, Basketball Australia chief Anthony Moore denied those claims, saying "there is absolutely nothing from our perspectives and our discussions so far with our athletes and our coaches that anything untoward happened in the warm-up". "We don't play the game in that spirit. We apologize to our fans and will await the penalties to be handed down".

It resulted to the ejection of a total 13 players in a scuffle between the Philippines and Australia.

Per Fox Sports Australia, near the end of the third period, Australia's Chris Goulding was hit on the face.

"[Looking at the footage] one of our players, Nathan Sobey, is getting assaulted by a fan".

"You can not expect to do that to a team five times and not expect there to be retaliation".

Gilas lost by default, 53-89, as Fajardo and Norwood intentionally fouled themselves out of the game.

"We want basketball to be the victor".

Gilas players, led by Andray Blatche and Jason Castro rushed to Pogoy's aid, as players and coaching staff of the home team rushed into the court, either to join the fray or pacify those involved.

Following the game, both teams did not hold a postgame press conference as deemed necessary by FIBA.

Regardless of the strength of sanctions and how they are ultimately distributed, the shameful night was a horrendous look for a sport that has been riding a groundswell of goodwill due to national team success and increased individual Australian involvement in the NBA.
