Donald Trump: May presses case for U.S. trade deal at dinner

Americans in London have been warned to lie low during Donald Trump’s UK visit More

Trump's remarks, made in a bombshell interview with The Sun published Thursday during his first visit to Britain as U.S. president, are an explosive intervention into British politics that seem likely to cause political chaos and imperil the prime minister as she attempts to negotiate Britain's exit from the European Union.

Opponents to the controversial United States leader have threatened mass protests but Mr Trump is expected to avoid areas such as central London where demonstrators are likely to gather.

A high fence has been erected around the United States ambassador's central London residence where Trump will spend Thursday night and the embassy has sent out an alert warning Americans in London to keep a low profile in case protests turn violent.

Most of the protests will take place that day in central London, the USA officials said, with some occurring the days before and after. I think they agree with me on immigration. "I just want the people to be happy".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a frequent Trump critic, gave his approval for the balloon to be floated, with a spokesperson saying last week that the mayor "supports the right to peaceful protest and understand that this can take many different forms". As Trump argued the move towards Brexit is down to Britain having similar views on immigration to himself, he included Ireland in the talk, linking the country with United Kingdom member state Scotland.

"We've had a lot of questions about respect", she told Sky News.

Trump split off from his wife to instead walk at a clip with Prime Minister May.

Mrs May noted that more than one million Americans work for UK-owned firms, telling Mr Trump: "As we prepare to leave the European Union, we have an unprecedented opportunity to do more".

The Trumps, joined by the Mays, ascended the red-carpeted steps of Blenheim Palace to two-folded fanfare - protests outside the palace and a military ceremony featuring a performance of the "Liberty Fanfare" by bands of the Scots, Irish and Welsh guards.

Ahead of his arrival the PM said she would use the visit to "forge a strengthened, ambitious and future-proof trade partnership" with the USA after Brexit.

Trump and May met in England on Thursday to discuss a host of bilateral issues, including what a US-UK trade deal would look like following Britain's eventual departure from the EU.

The baby blimp of President Trump is due to be flown over London this week.

The state visit was never actually scheduled - there has been fierce opposition to it in many quarters of Britain - and this trip is part of a working visit instead, meaning among other things that Mr. Trump will overnight at Winfield House, the USA ambassador's handsome residence near Regents Park, rather than at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle as a guest of the queen.

Despite not being an official state visit, the Government is desperate to ensure the USA leader feels he is being treated with the appropriate level of pomp and ceremony.

After the visit, Trump will decamp to Finland for a one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16. In London, we speak with Sheila Menon, social justice activist and one of the organizers behind the Trump baby blimp.

She added: "They will be talking to teams on the ground and they will be liaising with police services up and down the country".
