Trump hits new high in poll, though Russian Federation issues linger

Trump's overall approval rating ticked up to 45 per cent in the latest Wall Street Journal / NBC poll, a high point for his presidency.

In a tweet on July 23, Trump also said he and Putin "got along very well, which is a good thing", and accused what he called the "Corrupt Media" of putting a negative spin on the summit.

Russia's ambassador to the United States told the media in Moscow on Wednesday that Trump and Putin had reached several "verbal agreements" on weapons treaties and Syria, but USA officials are still scrambling to determine what those agreements might have been.

The share of voters who believe Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election rose to 65 percent, up 8 percentage points from June 2017, according to the poll.

He also said while Trump's Putin antics may have played badly in the Acela corridor of the East Coast, they do not translate in flyover country.

"Why didn't he tell our campaign?"

GOP Sen. John McCain called Trump's performance at the news conference "disgraceful", and House Speaker Paul Ryan publicly contradicted the president when he said "there is no question that Russian Federation interfered in our election". "Because it is all a big hoax, that's why", Trump wrote. That's why such a large segment of President's Trump's remarks during the question and answer period in Helsinki focused not on Russia's meddling, but on the questions of whether his campaign colluded with Russian Federation or whether Russia's meddling affected the outcome of the election.

Activists have expressed concern that, with a private meeting, neither Congress, nor U.S. Intelligence agencies, nor the American people have any idea what, if anything, Trump promised Putin, and could not refute anything Putin might claim Trump said or offered. "He's been very clear that there wasn't any".

Trump's tweets on Thursday come as he has alternated between trying to quell a political uproar over his comments in Helsinki - he refused to back the USA intelligence community's assessment of Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election during a joint news conference with Putin, instead touting Putin's strong denials - and his desire to not back down or apologize over his performance. On both questions, those who say they "strongly disapprove" of Trump's performance outnumber those who say they "strongly approve" by better than 2 to 1.

Among them were Ukraine, Syria, Russian meddling in the US elections, and the nations' nuclear arsenal, according to Trump.

Trump denies there was any collusion and has described Mueller's probe as a "witch hunt" meant to detract from his election victory.
