Women’s March Calls for Abolishing Border Security at D.C. Protest

Hundreds gather in the atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building to protest against family detentions and to demand the end of criminalizing efforts of asylum seekers and immigrants

This isn't the first time protesters are rallying in the nation's capital about Trump's immigration policy and family separations.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to rally across the country Saturday to protest the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, according to organizers.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington state tweeted Thursday that she was proud to be arrested to protest the policy that has separated families at the southern border. In Portland, Oregon, for example, several stay-at-home moms are organizing their first rally while caring for young kids.

June 30 we're putting ourselves in the street again.

It took police about 90 minutes to arrest them and end the demonstration.

Trump agreed to rescind the separation part of the policy, but opponents say the administration has no plan for the speedy reunification of those families.

But local organisers are shouldering on-the-ground planning, many of them women relying on informal networks established during worldwide women's marches on Mr Trump's inauguration and its anniversary.

On Thursday, Capitol Police arrested almost 600 people as they demonstrated inside a Senate office building.

Thursday's protesters were joined by others around the country.

San Francisco: Protesters will start at Mission Dolores Park at 10 a.m. and will march to the Civic Center, 355 McAllister St., where they will rally at 11 a.m. Over 600 marches are now taking place across the country, from major cities to small towns, where crowds have gathered to stand in opposition to ICE's inhumane policy of separating parents from children and then imprisoning children in detention centers.

The president is not at the White House during the protest as he is spending the weekend in New Jersey.

Sharaf and three other women recently fired up their laptops and cellphones at her dining room table - one mother breastfeeding her son as she worked.

"I have watched ICE liberate towns from the grasp of [criminal gangs]", Trump said on Twitter.

"As far as I'm concerned, this is a national emergency that we all need to be focused on right now", added co-organiser Erin Conroy.

"(The) family separation crisis is not over.

Outside the White House, protesters waved "Families Belong Together" signs and chanted "Shame!" as religious leaders and activists urged the administration to be more welcoming of foreigners and to reunite families.

"Jesus was a refuge", she said. Crowds gathered in sweltering 86-degree morning heat at a Manhattan park before a planned march across the Brooklyn Bridge to Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn, near the federal courthouse.

"They're here because they want to get away from the violence and corruption in their own country", he said of immigrants crossing the border today.

"We are here to say we're ready to sacrifice, and we're ready to leave our jobs, leave our families to come and take this act of civil disobedience here", Sarsour said.
