England face record target against India

Unfinished business Virat Kohli pulls the ball to the boundary during an assured innings that ended three runs short of another century when he was caught at slip off Adil Rashid

Kohli, who scored his first hundred in England in the first Test of the series, made 97 before being dismissed by Adil Rashid.

England require another 498 runs to win over the final two days of play and history suggests that is highly unlikely.

Jennings and Alastair Cook survived a tricky nine-over spell at the end of the day and as Cook negotiated the last ball, another roar went up.

Earlier, Kohli succeeded where he had narrowly failed in the first innings by scoring a century to underline his side's dominant position on the third day.

Pujara faced 208 balls, including 19 fours, and put on 113 with Kohli. England capitulated in a familiar fashion, at one stage losing nine wickets for 74 runs in the space of just 20.5 overs.

After that, the turn was of England to play where England was at 23 runs without any loss of wickets.

India continued their innings from 124 for 2 and a lead of 292 runs with Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara at the helm.

England's Jonny Bairstow will have an X-ray on his left hand after taking a blow on the third morning of the third Test against India.

"He is okay; the way he bowled a couple of overs today, I hope he continues to do that.

Ajinkya Rahane was watchful too as Kohli was yet to score his century before tea.

With two new batsmen at the crease and the new ball in James Anderson's hands, England searched for further breakthroughs and Hardik Pandya was inexplicably dropped by Keaton Jennings after a ball from Broad jumped off a length.

India captain Virat Kohli, a century-maker on Monday, then produced a brilliant diving catch at third slip to remove Ollie Pope for 16 four balls later and England was 84-4 at lunch.

"I'm a big believer in players learning from players, and I think ours will be watching the way Kohli lets the ball come, and nearly takes third and fourth slip out of the game", Farbrace said.

"You would be hard-pressed to argue against him being seen as the best player in the world at the moment", said England assistant coach Paul Farbrace.

"He's a high-quality player, and has shown he's learned a lot on this tour alone.

All-rounder Woakes struck again in his next over as he trapped Rahul LBW.

"When I was injured I was working on my fitness, my training schedules", added the 24-year-old, playing just his fourth Test following a debut against South Africa in Cape Town in January. Assisted by overcast conditions suited to swing and seam bowling, the Indian pace trio of Ishant Sharma (2/24), Mohammed Shami (1/28) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/26) got rid of the English top order.

But for now, the hurt of Lord's seemed a distant memory as Virat Kohli's boys roared back in the series in which they looked dead and buried only a week back.
