Kremlin, before meeting with Trump adviser, bemoans US apathy

US President Donald Trump answers a reporter's question during an interview with Reuters in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington US

U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton meets on Thursday in Geneva with his Russian counterpart.

When he met with President Trump in Helsinki last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to implement a five-year extension built into the treaty.

The meetings are aimed toward "opening up channels" and 'break through some of the difficulties we've had, ' he added.

Bolton wasted little time in mentioning he had brought up the election meddling.

"Just so there's no confusion here, if the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons we will respond very strongly and they really ought to think about this a long time", Bolton said.

But he appeared to offer a bit of an olive branch.

"Sanctions are imposed and thus we get evidence that the cause of the sanction policy and its meaning is to take Russian Federation down a peg, so to say".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov responded to US defense official John Bolton's threats against the Syrian government by demanding all uninvited foreign forces leave Syria.

The Trump advisor also said he had warned Moscow against meddling in the U.S. midterm elections in November. "So the point was that perhaps joint US-Russian efforts might be sufficient", Bolton said.

He said that the meeting was constructive, adding that Russia will look at the USA proposals made during the meeting and expects the United States to consider Russian initiatives.

Patrushev said he invited Bolton to have the next meeting in Russian Federation, but no specific time frame was set.

Patrushev, in separate comments to the news media, said progress was made "in certain areas where lines of communications could be restored, and more work done by agencies - State, Defense and others", according to the Russian news agency Tass.

Bolton said he and his counterpart covered an array of topics, including nuclear nonproliferation, arms control, counterterrorism, illegal immigration, cyber-related issues, and "regional issues" including Syria, the broader Middle East, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump's national security adviser said on Wednesday that the United States is not seeking to oust Iran's leadership but wants "massive change" in its behaviour.

"Americans say you should accept what they say in the talks, which is not negotiation, but dictatorship".

"Every day that goes by that mistake continues, this crisis could be over instantly if they did the right thing as a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, part of the West, and release (him). without condition", he said.

Mr Bolton's comments come after months of pressure from the USA government, following Donald Trump's decision to abandon a global nuclear deal with Iran.

At a news conference in Jerusalem on Wednesday, Bolton was asked whether the United States had discussed any plans with Israel on how to capitalise on economic protests in Iran and if the demonstrations posed any tangible threat to the Tehran government.
