Dallas officer Amber Guyger fired after manslaughter charge for killing Botham Jean

A Dallas police officer was arrested Sunday on a manslaughter warrant in the shooting of a black man at his home, Texas authorities said.

Amber Guyger, the Dallas police officer who was off duty when she killed her neighbor, Botham Jean, in his own apartment, was sacked by Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall on Monday morning. Police have said she was off-duty but still in uniform on September 6 when she fatally shot 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean, who she thought was burglarizing her apartment. Guyger told officers at the scene that she'd gotten off on the wrong floor of her apartment building by mistake, and believed Jean to be an intruder. Jean was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

"The swift termination of any officer who engages in misconduct that leads to the loss of innocent life is essential if the Dallas Police Department is to gain and maintain the public trust", Rawlings said in a statement.

Guyger was arrested three days after the incident after the Texas Rangers chose to postpone pursuing a warrant "until they could follow up on information that they received from the interview with the officer". She remains free on $300,000 bond. Last week, the chief released a statement arguing that opening an administrative investigation into the officer could "compromise the criminal investigation." .

The search warrant statement says Mr Jean "confronted the officer at the door".

Officer Amber Guyger had been dismissed after almost five years on the job for her actions on the night of the shooting earlier in September, Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall said in a statement. When she opened the door fully, Guyger saw a "large silhouette" across the room and began giving commands, which Jean "ignored", the affidavit said.

However, for many, the decision is almost three weeks too late, eroding an already tumultuous relationship between law enforcement and vulnerable communities that have been disproportionally impacted in police shootings. That position apparently changed over the weekend, as Guyger's firing was not expected.

It's not yet clear when Guyger's case will head to trial.

Guyger was arrested for the death of her neighbor, Botham Jean. He had worked for the PricewaterhouseCoopers accounting firm in Dallas since graduating.
