Hurricane Florence death toll climbs as flooding spreads

Helen Mc Koy walks down a flooded street in her neighborhood as Florence continues to dump heavy rain in Fayetteville N.C. Sunday Sept. 16 2018.

The city, which took a direct hit when Florence plowed into the state as a hurricane on Friday, has been largely cut off since then due to storm surges and flooding from the Cape Fear River.

According to NBA.com, Jordan is contributing $1 million each to the American Red Cross and the Foundation For The Carolinas' Hurricane Florence Response Fund.

"I thought, well what can I do?" he said.

Cooper said many roads are still closed throughout the state.

"The ground is saturated, and even a small amount of rain can cause flash flooding", Cooper said. "And new road closings are still happening". But as he rolled along his route, Alsup kept telling his Facebook followers that he had room for more, asking them to point him to where pets needed help. "If I give you my word, it's gonna get done".

On Monday, only nine miles of northbound I-95 in SC were closed, from mile marker 181 to mile marker 190. I-95 and portions of I-40 are closed. The recommended detour for southbound traffic is to take I-40 west all the way to Hickory, and get on USA 321 south until it meets I-85 in Gastonia. NCDOT has put up barriers on southbound I-95 at US 64 in Rocky Mount to enforce the detour there; local traffic headed to Wilson or Johnston County must take 64 one way or another and find alternative routes to their destinations.

A group of local fishermen keep an eye on the Cape Fear River as they stage for potential water rescues while additional flooding remains a threat from Florence in Fayetteville N.C. Sunday Sept. 16 2018

USA 301 in Cumberland and Robeson counties is also closed in several places.

"We believe our extensive basin closure work was instrumental in positioning us to reduce the storm's impact - water levels in many ash basins near the coast were lower as a result of our closure activity, so the basins were better able to accommodate significant rainfall", she said in a statement.

"I know people are frustrated from having to wait indoors for so long and many people are without power - that has got to be very hard - but even as we speak we are pulling out of floodwaters and are rescuing people". Officials at the center said that its outlying clinics were tentatively scheduled to re-open on Wednesday, but added that actual re-openings were "to be determined based on factors like weather, road and facility condition as well as water and utility availability". He said they should stay put for now, namely people from Wilmington, which was hard-hit by the storm.

From there, Alsup said the remaining dogs and cats went off to vacant shelters across the country. Officials are monitoring the bridge and could close it if water reaches the roadway. People have already died, and were it not for the heroic actions of hundreds of volunteers, more lives would be in peril.

The EPA also will be inspecting Superfund sites around North and SC in the coming days to find out if any were damaged, possibly causing the spread of unsafe material, such as pesticides or asbestos. Emergency workers reported rescuing and evacuating more than 2,200 people and around 575 animals, he said.
