Trump claims he fell asleep watching Obama

US President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally at Ford Center in Evansville Indiana

He railed against everything from his successor's failure to condemn white nationalists after Charlottesville - "How hard can that be?"

The Republican National Committee, for its part, responded to Obama's speech by saying, "President Obama stepped back into the spotlight to make the case that our country is on the wrong track".

Mr Obama called on people to vote in America's midterm November election, saying "our democracy depends on it". "Because there is actually only one real check on bad policies and abuses of power".

"They'll promise to clean up corruption and then plunder away; they start to undermine norms that insure accountability and try to chance the rules to enhance their power, and appeal to racial nationalism that is barely veiled".

"With the House in Democrat hands, they won't be able to repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but they will be able to guarantee that no more pro-growth, pro-worker legislation will be enacted".

Obama also addressed Trump's tone-deaf comments past year, when the president claimed that there were "some very fine people on both sides" during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that saw white supremacists squaring off against anti-racism protesters. "It did not start with Donald Trump ― he is a symptom, not the cause".

He also criticised Mr Trump's response to the violence a year ago at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted in the death of one person.

Obama left office with a 57 percent approval rating, and like most presidents, his standing has only improved since departing the West Wing.

He aims to criticize Trump without giving up his own post-partisan stature as a president emeritus, which he has publicly embraced in a series of events with former Republican President George W. Bush.

Obama said: "If you thought elections don't matter, I hope these past two years have corrected that impression".

On Saturday, Obama hits Orange County, Calif., where he headlines a rally at the Anaheim Convention center to bolster seven Democrats running for House seats.

That kind of equivocation, Obama argued, isn't one that has its roots in the Republican Party, referring back to one of his favorite presidents and fellow IL son, Abraham Lincoln. "The biggest threat to our democracy is indifference".

He will appear at a September 13 rally in OH with Richard Cordray, a former Obama appointee, who is running for governor in a state that is also one of the top targets for the Holder effort.

Breitbart.com contributor Joel B. Pollak not only attacked Obama in a September 7 critique of the speech, but also, the University of IL itself.

The former president also criticized the claims of an anonymous New York Times op-ed, which said many staffers are "working diligently from within" to keep Trump from enacting damaging policies.
