Climate-Change Heatwaves Will Cause Mental Health Crises in Miami, Study Warns

World Health Organisation

Researchers warned that as the earth's temperatures rose, the rain fall also increased due to increased water evaporation. A separate study found a link between higher temperatures and an increase of suicide rates in the United States and Mexico.

While all three factors were significantly associated with worse mental health, there was a clear hierarchy among them - hurricanes were the worst, followed by long-term warming and short-term temperature changes. "We have a lot of work to do to figure out precisely what is causing what".

According to the temperature records, today, our planet is about 1 degree Celsius hotter than it was between 1850 and 1900.

The Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance survey might be the largest public health monitoring survey in the world, Obradovich explained.

Researchers have added a note to their study saying that the major limitation of this study was that the data came from a developed nation and from temperate climates. "Yet for too long, mental health has been mostly an afterthought, despite its overwhelming impacts on communities and young people, everywhere". "We had this nice decade's worth of information about how environmental conditions related to the way people reported their mental health status", Obradovich said. One signified there had been mental health difficulties over the 30 days. It gives them evidence that hotter temperatures across the U.S. worsen mental health of residents. Meanwhile, months with an increase of precipitation can increase the probability of mental health issues by 2 percent.

Is it possible that climate change can make a harmful impact on our mental health?

Finally, the team considered the toll of hurricanes on mental health. "Months with more than 25 days of rain increased the chances of mental health problems by 2%, while temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius led to a 0.5% increase", added Obradovich.

One in five young people will experience a mental health problem this year.

In the new study, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab along and Harvard compared temperature changes and mental health issues. In a new study, researchers found that along with increasing global temperatures comes a corresponding increase in mental-health issues. Further low-income individuals seemed to be affected more (60 percent more) with climate change than other income groups.

Some people were more vulnerable than others, the researchers found.

Between 2002 and 2012, almost 2 million participants were asked this question: "Now thinking about your mental health, which includes stress, depression, and problems with emotions, for how many days during the past 30 days was your mental health not good?"
