Democrats renew questions over Brett Kavanaugh's honesty and temperament

FBI To Investigate Allegations Against Brett Kavanaugh

As the investigation of past actions continues, lawmakers in both parties are parsing Kavanaugh's testimony from last week.

"How many stories of sexual violence do you need to hear in order to believe women?" one woman asked McConnell, a Republican, as he walked toward an escalator at Reagan National Airport, his aides trying to clear his path, according to video circulated on social media.

Leaning: Collins' signal that she was comfortable Kavanaugh wouldn't overturn Roe vs. Wade appeared to be a sign that she was going to vote for him.

The White House noted that Kavanaugh wasn't arrested or charged and questioned the incident's relevance.

Murkowski joined other undecided senators who backed Sen. Last week, a triumvirate of Republican senators - Jeff Flake of Arizona, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska - vowed to withhold support for the nominee unless the White House allowed a supplemental background check into claims of sexual assault against Kavanaugh from California university professor Christine Blasey Ford.

"Even if you want to discount what happened when he was 15 in high school and 18 in college, you can not discount what he is saying and professing at age 53 when it flies in the face of being truthful", Schumer said.

Sen. Flake and Senators.

The battle over Kavanaugh is playing out in the middle of a midterm election campaign that has energized Democratic women across the country, against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement. He is young enough, 53, that he could shape American jurisprudence for decades to come.

President Trump then ordered a "supplemental investigation", to be completed in a week. "We don't want a Supreme Court whose credibility is in doubt". Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said she didn't know if the report should be made public, noting that the Federal Bureau of Investigation likely wouldn't come to any conclusions about what happened.

The poll has less rosy news for Republicans as a Quinnipiac poll released at the same time: voters still believe they'll turn out for Democrats in November, even though Democrats have treated the Supreme Court nomination process like a kangaroo court. He also remembered Kavanaugh as a "relatively shy" person, but one who would get "aggressive and even belligerent" when inebriated. He was partisan. He went on the attack against senators questioning him.

Earlier today, US President Donald Trump defended his pick but conceded that the appeals court judge has had a "bit of difficulty" with alcohol.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is pledging that senators will begin voting on Kavanaugh's nomination this week, and criticized what he called "endless delay and obstruction".

President Donald Trump brushed aside concerns about Brett Kavanaugh's ability to be objective in the wake of his political allegations to senators, saying his Supreme Court nominee will be 'totally impartial'.

"Brett was getting tapped in and he was incredibly drunk, in a ridiculous outfit and had to come up to me and sing a silly song", she said.

Facing New Hampshire voters at Saint Anselm College, Flake repeatedly condemned the rise of "tribalism" shaping the Supreme Court debate and US politics. Charles "Chad" Ludington, who said he was a friend of Kavanaugh's at Yale University and now teaches at North Carolina State University, called Kavanaugh "a frequent drinker, and a heavy drinker". The list, reportedly drafted by Senate Republicans, did not include former classmates who contradicted Kavanaugh's testimony about the extent of his youthful drinking and partying. "If he can lie about this, what else can he lie about?"

NBC News's Przybyla and Caldwell included this testimony to make Kavanaugh seem like a hypocrite.
