Jamal Khashoggi and the Washington Post

Jamal Khashoggi has not been seen since entering Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago

The Post initially held off on publishing the column amid hope for Mr Khashoggi's return, Ms Attiah said. Now I have to accept: "That is not going to happen", Attiah wrote.

On Thursday, the Post published what it described as Khashoggi's last column in honor of the missing journalist.

In Turkey on Tuesday, a high-level Turkish official told the AP that police investigators searching the Saudi Consulate had found evidence that Khashoggi was killed there.

It is believed he was tortured, murdered and dismembered in the presence of up to 15 Saudi officials, including Dr al-Tubaigy and Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, who is a bodyguard for the Crown Prince.

Liam Fox, the worldwide trade secretary, has pulled out of next week's "Davos in the Desert" summit in Riyadh amid allegations that Saudi Arabia murdered Jamal Khashoggi, the missing journalist. The Washington Post reported that Turkey had informed United States officials about audio and video recordings suggesting that the journalist had been murdered in the Saudi Consulate.

Adding to the picture of Saudi influence potentially weighing on American decision-making about Khashoggi, US media reported that US$100 million for Washington's stabilisation efforts in Syria was deposited by the kingdom as Pompeo arrived in Riyadh.

The Washington Post on Wednesday evening published a final column by Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi writer who was allegedly killed in Turkey by Saudi officials, in which he makes a poignant call for freedom of expression in the Middle East and lays out a vision for the elevation of Arab voices in a free and independent media.

In it, Khashoggi pointed to the muted worldwide response to ongoing abuses against journalists by governments in the Middle East. He was the head of Saudi Arabia's Forensic Commission at the time of his visit to Australia, VIFM's annual report from 2014-2015 notes.

Saudi Arabia has denied involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance.

Khashoggi's editor said the article "perfectly captures his commitment and passion for freedom in the Arab world".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo just returned from Saudi Arabia and briefed Trump on the status of the investigation into the journalist's disappearance in Turkey.

Speaking on "Fox & Friends" Thursday, Napolitano was asked about what President Trump can do to respond to the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

According to Axios, Pompeo told Salman during their meeting that the Saudi leader needs to "own" the situation surrounding the alleged macabre murder of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

According to Yeni Safak, Saudi Arabia's consul to Istanbul, Mohammed al-Otaibi, can be heard on one tape saying during Khashoggi's torture: "Do this outside".

In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Trump compared the case of Khashoggi to the allegations of sexual assault leveled against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has tweeted he's pulling out of the Future Investment Initiative summit in Saudi Arabia.
