Khashoggi death: U.S. slams Saudi for deception but wont scrap arms deal

Breaking News

"We are far from seeing everything on the table and the perpetrators being brought to justice", she said.

Meanwhile, Istanbul's chief prosecutor summoned 28 more staff members of the Saudi consulate, including Turkish citizens and foreign nationals, to give testimony on Monday, Turkish state broadcaster TRT reported.

The crisis has shaken Western confidence in the world's top oil exporter and its de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Another suspect, Salah al-Tubaigy, is a renowned Saudi autopsy specialist with ties to the security forces. Amid the scuffle, Khashoggi was put in a chokehold which ultimately led to his death.

After denying any knowledge of Khashoggi's whereabouts for two weeks, Saudi Arabia admitted on Friday that the journalist died in a fight inside its consulate.

- Oct 5: Crown Prince Mohammed told journalists from Bloomberg that Khashoggi had left the consulate after "a few minutes or one hour".

"They tried to prevent him from shouting but he died", the official said.

Raab called the case "terrible" but said the government was not ending its relationship with the conservative kingdom, which buys hundreds of millions of pounds in weapons from Britain each year.

It was not until Saturday - 18 days after Khashoggi went missing - that the Saudis acknowledged he had been killed inside the consulate by Saudi agents.

The Saudi regime insisted on Sunday that the regime was still working on finding the body, saying Khashoggi had been killed in a "rogue operation".

Things went wrong from the start as the team overstepped their orders and quickly employed violence, the official said.

He said he would talk with President Trump before heading to the anti-terror meeting, but didn't expect a lecture on human rights abuses was on the schedule.

"This is the most in-your-face move by an Middle East ally", Graham said. "It's about the war in Yemen where tens of thousands of civilians are being killed, it's about them spreading hatred of Christians and Jews and Hindus throughout the world". That would be a violation of diplomatic protocol and could embarrass Turkey.

Maas has also called into question the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia.

"I don't believe you can have someone who would authorize this sort of an act be in a position of power with a nation that's very important to us", Tillis said.

White House officials said on Sunday that Trump has not changed his belief that the crown prince is a strong leader who is passionate about his country.

It has threatened the kingdom's business relationships, with several senior executives and government officials shunning an investor conference in Riyadh scheduled for next week and some USA lawmakers putting pressure on Trump to impose sanctions and stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia. "We'll have an answer by probably Tuesday or so", he said.
