Majority of Americans want Kavanaugh investigated further; Women leading the charge

Brett Kavanaugh is the first member of the Supreme Court to hire an all-female class of law clerks

Chief Justice John Roberts is referring complaints against new Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to federal judges in Colorado and neighboring states.

Asked how the Kavanaugh debate would impact their midterm vote, slightly more say it makes them more inclined to support Democrats for Congress than Republicans.

Democrats counter that the Kavanaugh fallout has enraged many women voters upset with the way the Senate confirmation battle turned out, likely increasing Democratic turnout in November and threatening Republican control of the House of Representatives. Such a development could also lead to an effort by House Democrats to impeach Kavanaugh.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) got Democrats to agree to unanimously confirm 15 judicial nominees in order that the politicians could return to their home districts to campaign for the midterm elections. Women as a whole support an investigation 58 percent to 37 percent, while men are almost evenly split on that matter, with 47 percent supporting an investigation and 49 percent opposing it.

Kavanaugh, 53, began work immediately after his official swearing-in on Saturday evening even as protesters stormed the front steps of the Supreme Court and pounded on the 13-ton bronze doors, furious that he had been confirmed despite a decades-old allegation of sexual assault brought by Christine Blasey Ford.

While numerous results in the poll fall along familiar partisan lines, it also found that political independents are more suspicious than supportive of the new justice.

But Democrats are defending 25 seats, so being back home is more consequential for them.

Prior to Kavanaugh's confirmation, some polls had showed an uptick in GOP interest in this year's elections. "But again, I think history would tell us, and polling data tells us, Democrats are more animated over Kavanaugh and over other things".

Democrats claim he displayed excessive anger and was too partisan in defending himself against 11th hour allegations by three women who claimed he sexually assaulted them during high school and college freshmen parties. There are no significant gender differences among Democrats and Republicans on the issue.

Independent voters are far less supportive of the decision to confirm Kavanaugh: 47 percent say the Senate erred in confirming him, while 34 percent say it made the right decision. While it seems like America's radical partisanship came out of nowhere after Trump's victory and Kavanaugh's nomination, the fact of the matter is that it's been bubbling under the surface for quite a while and only needed a couple of sparks to explode.

This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone October 8-11, 2018, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 1,144 adults, with 65 percent reached on cell phones and 35 percent on landlines. Among both registered voters and likely voters in the survey, his approval rating stood at 43 percent.

The organizers ensure that the event does not support any party, even if the funding comes in large part from groups that support democrats, and internet users illustrate their tweets calling for a protest of blue waves in reference to the democratic Party.
