NOAA Predicts Warmer Winter for Much of the US

NOAA predicting mild winter in New England – Boston News, Weather, Sports

Alaska has a 40% chance of increased precipitation this year, matching Florida, parts of Texas, and other states across the south, according to the forecasters.

The Climate Prediction Center issues updates its 3-month outlooks once per month, NOAA said, and the next update for this winter is expected November 15. He said there is a chance El Nino could reach moderate strength and a "blob" of warm water setting up in the Northeast Pacific Ocean could set up a jet stream pattern that maximizes the delivery of cold air into the eastern United States.

The NOAA said that the Southeast, Tennessee Valley, Ohio Valley, and Mid-Atlantic all have equal chances for below-, near- or above-average temperatures.

The balmy prediction is due to the roughly 75% chance of an El Niño developing.

"NOAA" s Winter 2018 temperature outlook for the United States. "We expect El Nino to be in place in late fall to early winter", said NOAA's Climate Prediction Center Deputy Director Mike Halpert, according to CNN. "The last cold winter that the country saw was back in 2013-14, and I'd expect MI to probably follow that pattern".

Warmer-than-normal conditions are anticipated across much of the northern and western USA, with the greatest likelihood in Alaska and from the Pacific Northwest to the Northern Plains.

Drought conditions are most likely across the Southwest, Southern California, the central Great Basin, central Rockies, Northern Plains, and parts of the interior Pacific Northwest.

-Wetter-than-average conditions are favored across the southern tier of the US, and up into the Mid-Atlantic.

Even so, it's no time to ditch the shovels and heavy winter jackets, with NOAA warning that its forecast does not mean the winter of 2018-2019 will not feature major snowstorms.

The most severe (if at all so to speak this time) winter expects the Northern Rocky mountains, the OH valley and the region of the Great lakes.

-This outlook does not project seasonal snowfall accumulations.

Last winter ranked among the warmest third in historical records, 1.8 degrees above normal averaged over the nation. "We stand by our forecast and formula, which accurately predicted the many storms last winter, as well as this summer's steamy, hot conditions", editor Peter Geiger wrote.
