'Presidential Alert' sent to every phone in America

FEMA to Test ‘Presidential Alert System’ Wednesday IMAGE

Older Americans will remember emergency alerts being around for decades on broadcast TV and radio. It was supposed to happen last month but response efforts to Hurricane Florence pushed it back to today.

FEMA tested an alert system on Wednesday to millions of USA phones called the "Presidential Alert", which was meant to be a method of warning the public in cases of national emergencies.

The header for the notification will read "Presidential Alert".

When President Donald Trump presses send on this message, every active cell phone in the country will receive an alert-approximately 225 million smart phones reaching 75 percent of the US population. Users can not opt out of receiving the WEA test.

Wednesday's test was originally scheduled for September 20, but was pushed back when Hurricane Florence hit the East Coast. However, FEMA confirmed to CNN that Trump will not be sending the alert from his cellphone.

If you still believe you were near a tower and didn't get the alert or if you want to provide feedback, FEMA wants to hear from you.

When will we get another message blast in the future?

A number of people are testing ways to turn off the presidential alerts through jailbroken or rooted phones, but these methods may bring risks of causing other problems with your phone. A similar wireless emergency alert test message has been sent to all cell phones nationwide.

Only because a "Presidential Alert" would be sent at the direction of Trump, who has broken with Presidential norms to furiously lecture from his Twitter podium. The national test will use the same special tone and vibration as with all WEA messages (i.e. Tornado Warning, AMBER Alert).

Not everyone was pleased about the decision to send out the test alert.

FEMA officials estimate it will reach about 75 percent of all mobile phones in the country, including phones on all of the major carriers.

The test message was sent out at 11:18 a.m. PT/2:18 p.m. ET on Wednesday, though FEMA said it might take a few minutes for the test to make it to all phones.

Unlike the Amber and weather alerts, the presidential alert can't be turned off.
