Russian Space Crew Makes Emergency Landing

The launch failure marks an unprecedented mishap for the Russian space program, which has been dogged by a string of launch failures and other incidents in recent years.

New NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine, who watched the launch at the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome along with his Russian counterpart, said Hague and Ovchinin were in good condition.

The descent was sharper than usual meaning the crew was subjected to a greater G-force, but they have been prepared for this scenario in training, the commentator said.

Speaking with reporters in Moscow before Thursday's launch, Bridenstine said that Russian-American cooperation in space remained strong, amid an investigation into the cause of the leak.

In 1975, a crewed Soyuz rocket suffered an in-flight failure, causing an abort 295 sec. after launch.

The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station at 4:40 a.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 11 (2:40 p.m.in Baikonur) carrying American astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin.

NASA has relied on Russian rockets to ferry astronauts to the space station since the United States retired its Space Shuttle program in 2011, although the agency has announced plans for a test flight carrying two astronauts on a SpaceX commercial rocket next April. It burned up while re-entering the Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean on May 8.

About 30 minutes later the capsule parachuted onto a barren area of steppe in Kazakhstan.

"Teams have been in contact with the crew".

Russia's RIA news agency reported that Russian Federation has immediately suspended all manned space launches after the failure.

The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said a state commission has already been established to study the accident. He said Russian Federation will share all relevant information with the U.S. The last failure of a manned Soyuz launch was in 1983 when a booster exploded.

Traveling to the International Space Station is a pretty special thing that only a very select group of people will ever have the opportunity to participate in.

This week's rocket launch on a Roscosmos Soyuz rocket didn't exactly go as planned.

With the failure of this launch, there are far-reaching consequences for the world's human space programs, and for those astronauts and cosmonauts now on board the International Space Station.

It's fantastic that the two-man rocket crew landed safe and sound but this whole episode does put the current ISS crew in a bit of an odd spot. Hague has been in the astronaut corps for five years after a career in the Air Force. Russian activities in Ukraine, charges of interfering in the USA presidential election of 2016 and the conflict in Syria are some of the main issues.

The aborted mission dealt another blow to the troubled Russian space program that now serves as the only way to deliver astronauts to the orbiting outpost.
