Saudi Dissident Believes Kingdom Tapped His Calls With Missing Journalist

Turkey expects Saudi cooperation in Khashoggi case FM

The president has said the United States will inflict "severe punishment" if Saudi Arabia is found to be responsible for the death of Mr Khashoggi.

Khashoggi, a US resident and Washington Post columnist critical of Riyadh's policies, disappeared on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

In a joint statement on Sunday, the foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany said they were treating the matter with the "utmost seriousness" and called for a "credible investigation" into the journalist's disappearance, adding that anyone who bears responsibility should be held to account.

The Sunday statement by France, Germany and the United Kingdom said the countries "encourage joint Saudi-Turkish efforts" and "expect the Saudi government to provide a complete and detailed response".

This message had been conveyed "directly to the Saudi authorities", said the statement, signed by Britain´s foreign minister Jeremy Hunt, his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian and Germany´s Heiko Maas.

Turkish officials say they believe a 15-member Saudi "assassination squad" killed Mr Khashoggi at the consulate.

Khashoggi's disappearance has already led to many media organizations withdrawing from an upcoming high-profile investment conference in Riyadh, including CNN, CNBC, The New York Times, and The Financial Times.

"Markets start to price in a fundamental change in the nature of the relationship between the USA and Saudi Arabia", said Jaap Meijer, managing director and head of equity research at Arqaam Capital.

Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Riyadh and a USA resident, disappeared on 2 October after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. "We're going to get to the bottom of it and there will be severe punishment", Trump told CBS News.

Saudi Arabia had earlier rejected all allegations levied on the nation due to Khashoggi's disappearance and also threatened to retaliate "with greater action" against any sanctions put on the nation.

Turkish officials fear Khashoggi was killed and dismembered.

Nearly two weeks on since journalist Jamal Khashoggi walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and never came out, the world is no closer to the truth of what happened to him.

The event is being hosted by the kingdom's Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman to promote his reform agenda.

On Sunday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Saudi Arabia should take Trump's warning over the journalist's fate seriously.

On Sunday, the Saudi stock market dropped as much as 7% following President Trump's threats of "severe punishment", indicating that investors are spooked.

But the president has also said "we would be punishing ourselves" by canceling arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

"If U.S. sanctions are imposed on Saudi Arabia, we will be facing an economic disaster that would rock the entire world", Aldakhil wrote on Sunday. In his CBS interview the president reiterated earlier concerns that any punishment shouldn't impact trade with Saudi Arabia, signaling that cutting off USA military sales to the kingdom may not be an option.
