Trump appears to threaten USMCA deal when lashing out at migrant caravan

But government statements, Twitter posts and even a police blockade haven't succeeded in stopping the caravan. And hundreds more are traveling through El Salvador en route to Guatemala. Hundreds of federal police officers and immigration officers have been sent to the porous border region along the Suchiate River which divides the two neighbours.

The migrants have agreed that they will begin their journey to the border crossing between Guatemala and Mexico around 11 a.m. local time.

A bridge over the river marks an official crossing point. Later, he retweeted a video of Mexican federal police arriving at the Guatemalan border and wrote: "Thank you Mexico, we look forward to working with you!" Those who do so will be held "at a migratory station" for up to 45 business days.

The group chanted: 'We are not smugglers, we are migrants, ' as they reorganized themselves on Friday afternoon.

The Central American caravan on Friday broke through a Guatemalan border fence and streamed by the thousands toward Mexican territory, defying Mexican authorities' entreaties for an orderly migration and Trump's threats of retaliation.

Participants in a 3,000-strong migrant caravan heading toward the United States have gathered in a park to wait a few more hours for members of the group who are still arriving. A complicated mix of pressures are weighing on Mexican officials as they decide how to handle the matter.

Mexico's foreign minister Luis Videgaray meanwhile told reporters he had met with United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, who said the UNHCR would help the Mexican government to process asylum applications for those in the caravan.

Beyond that, this situation catches Mexico at a odd time.

At a rally in Missoula, Montana, President Trump accused Democrats - without any evidence - of supporting a caravan of about 3,000 Central American migrants heading for the USA border and said the upcoming midterm vote will be "an election of the caravan".

Yesterday, the migrants made it to the Guatemala- Mexico Border. He was referring to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which is awaiting ratification.

"The U.S. ought to take responsibility", he said.

Mexico's ambassador to Guatemala said his country had made a decision to enforce a policy of "metered entry" in the face of the thousands clamoring to cross. The Army also restricted the use of weapons to personnel who may need to use force.

The threat followed another one earlier this week to cut off aid to Central American countries if the migrants weren't stopped. So that makes any worldwide policy negotiations tricky.

The Mexican visit is important for future relations because it comes just ahead of the inauguration in December of President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Around 4,000 people have fled ongoing violence in Honduras, where "gangs exercise widespread control in certain neighborhoods", The New York Times reports.

"A lot of money has been passing to people to come up to try and get to the border by Election Day", he said, without providing evidence.

"We are going to the United States!" he shouted euphorically.

"We're looking for concrete results", the State Department said before Pompeo's trip, "and for solutions that work for both countries".
