Brexit goes down to wire as May calls last-day talks

Brexit : Theresa May under pressure from eurosceptics

May briefed members of her cabinet on the new text in a conference call and was addressing MPs in a statement to the House of Commons later in the day.

The Prime Minister attended the event after updating the House of Commons on the draft Withdrawal Agreement and political declaration on the UK-EU future relationship, following her meeting with President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker last night.

But the deal does not address the thorny issues of fishing rights and Gibraltar, which have raised concerns in European Union capitals.

After meeting Juncker for one hour and 50 minutes, May announced that she will return to Brussels for last minute talks on Saturday, just a day before European Union leaders are due to sign off on the deal.

Also, the deal could still be rejected by the British parliament.

"This is the right deal for the UK".

Sanchez previously said Spain would vote against the Political Declaration as it is not happy with the clause regarding Gibraltar's future relations with the EU.

Formally, Brexit will kick off on March 29, 2019, followed by a transition period that should end on 31 December 2020.

"By possibly staying in the single market and the customs union, Northern Ireland could become the envy of the British Isles, attracting foreign direct investment from far and wide", she wrote.

The organisation said: "Given that unique cross-border perspective, we campaigned against Brexit".

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), whose members represent nearly 800,000 workers across Ireland, insisted there was no such thing as a "good Brexit". That 585-page legal treaty deals with the terms of Britain's departure, including what the country owes the EU.

Specific proposals are also included over the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland to ensure a future so-called backstop arrangement is not needed by either Britain or the EU.

He repeated his threat that Spain will vote against the planned agreement unless its interests are taken into account.

The BBC's Brussels reporter Adam Fleming said, from a first reading of the draft document that has just been published, it contained "something for everyone" but there was "lots" in it that would need to be negotiated.

May was due to address lawmakers Thursday and also held talks with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, whose country holds the rotating European Union presidency until the end of the year.

Spain has long claimed sovereignty over the territory, which adjoins the Spanish mainland but has been a British territory since 1713.

May spoke with Sanchez by phone late on Wednesday to say she wants an agreement that works for the United Kingdom and its overseas territories, including Gibraltar, according to her office.

"Only by achieving this can we arrive at a situation where the rights of citizens and workers, and where jobs and trade will not be impacted to a detrimental extent by this Brexit".
