Mueller investigation: "Jeff Sessions' fault was to do the right thing"

Since stepping into his new role on Wednesday, Whitaker has faced questions - principally from Democrats - about whether he should recuse from the Russian Federation investigation, given that he has written opinion pieces in the past about the investigation, and is a friend and political ally of a witness.

Those concerns stem from comments made by Whitaker before he joined the Justice Department past year.

Installed without Senate advise-and-consent, Whitaker, who inherits oversight of Mueller's investigation from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, has stated that "The Trump Organization's business dealings are plainly not within the scope of the investigation, nor should they be".

Despite calls for Whitaker to recuse himself from the investigation, like Sessions did at the dawn of the Trump administration, The Washington Post reported that he has no intention of doing so.
