Tear Gas Is 'Natural, You Could Actually Put It On Your Nachos'

Many of the migrants are women and children. But according to President Trump keeps talking about how he believes the migrants are stone cold criminals

A Central American migrant sits on top of the border structure separating Mexico, left, and the United States, right, as U.S. Border Patrol agents look on, right, Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, seen from Tijuana, Mexico.

Beto O'Rourke is speaking out against violence against migrants at the U.S. -Mexico border, urging the White House to "follow our own laws" and give asylum seekers the opportunity to petition for sanctuary, not lock them in cages or tear-gas them.

Meanwhile, Mexico is set to deport hundreds of "illegal" migrants who on Sunday tried to "violently" and "illegally" cross the United States border, according to the Mexican Interior Ministry.

Thousands of migrants have been gathering there after crossing through Mexico in a series of caravans that originated from Central America - and presumably are amongst those who were arrested on both sides of the border.

United States officials reopened the crossing at the San Ysidro port of entry between the U.S. city of San Diego and the Mexican city of Tijuana on Sunday after closing it for several hours. Mexico's Interior Department said about 500 migrants were involved in the attempt to rush the border, while USA authorities put the number at 1,000.

Video footage taken by Epoch Times journalist Charlotte Cuthbertson on November 25 shows migrants trying to get through the border fencing before they're repelled by Border Patrol agents.

At that point, before the group had reached the border, U.S. Customs and Border Protest officers who had gathered on the other side of the fence launched canisters of what a Reuters photographer identified as tear gas.

Video footage shows scores of migrants breaking down portions of the border fence near the city of Tijuana and crawling through the open space.

Most of the migrants stumbled back into camp in the northwestern Mexican city of Tijuana, dirty, scared and with ripped clothes.

The San Ysidro Port of Entry - the busiest land border crossing in the western hemisphere, according to the federal government - was shut down for around five hours Sunday.

Most recently, Trump reiterated his threat to close the entire southern border "if need be" - while telling Congress once again to "fund the WALL!".

Sunday's incident marked an escalation of tensions that have been mounting since groups of Central American migrants began arriving in Tijuana a few weeks ago on their journey to attempt to gain entry to the US. The Ministry of Interior said the main caravan has 8,247 people, with 7,417 of those located in Tijuana or nearby Mexicali.

It added despite heightened tensions there, Mexico would not send military forces to control 7,417 migrants from a caravan now amassed at the US-Mexico border. As they reached a bridge and stairway that leads to a square near the US border, they were stopped by Mexican authorities, who told them to wait for permission.

Democrats and other critics called the Trump administration's use of tear gas toward the migrants an overreaction and blamed the administration for rejecting efforts to address larger immigration issues. McAleenan said he was not aware of any successful illegal entries by caravan members into the US.
