Man City’s Raheem Sterling says media coverage fuels racism

Raheem Sterling accuses the Daily Mail of fuelling

Sterling endured alleged racial abuse from a Chelsea fan during City's 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Sterling appeared to laugh off the shocking incident at the time, but the abuse has drawn widespread condemnation amid fears the sport is being dragged back to the dark ages of the 1970s and 1980s when racism was rife. "We will investigate the matter and take the strongest possible action where necessary". We are fully supporting the police investigation and any information we gather will be passed on to them.

A club statement said evidence of racist behaviour will result in "severe sanctions, including bans".

Sterling issued a statement via his Instagram account on Sunday, in which he drew contrasts between media coverage of black and white footballers in the United Kingdom - a disparity he believes "helps fuel racism and aggressive behaviour".

The Spain global was part of the Chelsea FC team that secured a 2-0 win against Manchester City in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

"The Club and Raheem are fully engaged with Chelsea FC and the investigating authorities as they continue to examine the events in question".

The 24-year-old, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday, has been a player for Manchester City since 2015.

No arrests have yet been made, but Chelsea are assisting the police with their investigation.

In his post, England global Sterling cites newspaper headlines about team-mates Tosin Adarabioyo and Phil Foden buying houses. The abuse that he received, particularly in the media, and the language used against him, I have not seen it before.

"I think this is unacceptable. this young black kid is looked at in a bad light".

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football programme, Carragher and Gary Neville spoke about the written media's role in fuelling such incidents, the truth behind Sterling's personality and what more needs to be done.

It's a shame and disgraceful, if that is the case, if Raheem did suffer abuse at Stamford Bridge.

In many respects, I much prefer the overt racism now to the racism we went through in the last 10 years whereby we are being told that it doesn't exist so, therefore, let's get on with it. Sterling, meanwhile, has said it is import to speak out about big issues now in order to help future generations.

"Over the past two weeks, we have seen two alleged high-profile racist incidents happen from the stands at Premier League games [a banana skin was thrown towards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during Arsenal's game against Spurs]".

"I am obviously not surprised that things like this still happen, " Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said on Monday, when asked about the abuse of Sterling, "but I like the fact that we put the finger on it and say, 'You can not say what you want, it is not possible'".
