On Tuesday, she was granted a $7.5 million bail by a Canadian court, allowing the Huawei chief financial officer to return to her Vancouver home as extradition proceedings continue.

Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou was granted bail by a Canadian court on Tuesday, but only after four former colleagues, friends and her husband pledged C$10 million (Dh27m) to support her bail request.

As Australia tries to strike a balance in relations between the USA, our key strategic ally, and China, our biggest economic partner, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has argued that Australia can keep on side with both superpowers.

Huawei and China deny these assertions and counter that USA security claims are an effort to hurt its business. In addition, she is accused of misrepresenting or concealing ties between Huawei and Hong Kong's Skycom, which had a presence in Iran and attempted to sell products to Tehran in violation of USA and European sanctions. If convicted, she faces more than 30 years in prison.

But Richard Kurland, an immigration lawyer who's been sitting in court, says it could take years for the extradition process and appeals to play out.

The conditions of her bail stipulate that she must reside at her Vancouver residence, obey a curfew and travel only within a designated part of the city.

As for whether Meng might still be a flight risk, Sas says bail being set at $10-million is a strong incentive for her to stay in Vancouver.

Meng is a high-profile executive at Huawei, one of the world's biggest makers of smartphones and networking equipment.

While Meng secured her release, the International Crisis Group (ICG) think tank said its North East Asia senior adviser, former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig, was detained by Chinese state security in Beijing on Monday night.

Earlier Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government has contacted Chinese authorities about Kovrig's detention.

China had threatened severe consequences unless Canada released Meng immediately, and analysts have said retaliation from Beijing over the arrest was likely.

Meanwhile, Michael Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat to China, was arrested in Beijing Monday for reasons that are unclear.

"In China there is no coincidence", he said. Freeland on Monday said the Meng case is being handled under domestic and worldwide law and it's not appropriate for Canadian politicians to interfere.

Some 20 Chinese police officers patrolled outside Canada's embassy on Wednesday but they refused to explain their presence.

Chinese law makes it extremely hard for foreign non-governmental organizations to register because they have to find a local sponsor, James Zimmerman, a lawyer in Beijing and former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, told the Associated Press.

Richard McGregor, from the Lowy Institute, said China had taken Mr Kovrig hostage in response to the detention of the Huawei executive in a simple "tit for tat" move.

"It's easy to concoct espionage accusations against someone in China", he said.
