Pelosi agrees to step aside 2022 to appease Democratic rebels

The press-filled Oval Office meeting had been slated to cover border wall funding and the looming possibility of a partial government shutdown, but it quickly gave way to a reality TV atmosphere, with jabs between the President and Democratic leaders.

He said that the Democrats have always been supportive of "walls and fences" on the US-Mexico border but now when he wants to build a wall they refuse.

"If we don't get what we want, one way or the other, whether it's through you, through military, through anything you want to call, I will shut down the government", Mr Trump said.

Schumer also called Trump's remarks "astounding" and accused him of holding the government "hostage" over the border wall and his advisers of keeping him in a "cocoon" of false information. Schumer accused Trump of throwing a "temper tantrum" during the meeting, while Pelosi dared Trump to "do it" and press ahead with the shutdown. Trump wants $5 billion, but Democrats are unwilling to agree to that and any spending bill needs bipartisan support to pass Congress, due in part to Senate rules requiring a 60-vote threshold to advance (Republicans control the chamber 51-49).

Opponents say the wall, arguably Trump's main campaign promise in his 2016 election, is not only a waste of money but has been used by the president to whip up xenophobia.

"The proposal would limit members to three terms of service in those roles, with the option of seeking an additional fourth term with the support of two-thirds of House Democrats". We can do an nearly ideal job if we have the wall and proper border security, and that's what we're going to do for the American people.

It was a new reality that Trump, still smarting from his party's losses on November 6, appeared to be struggling to internalize as his demands for border wall funds fell flat with those he'll need as partners to deliver on his priorities.

President Donald Trump says the military will build his promised border wall "if Democrats do not give us the votes to secure our Country".

But a defence department said later: "To date, there is no plan to build sections of the wall".

She said the House Ways & Means Committee would make that decision and cautioned that "it's a little more challenging than you might think".

"If we don't get what we want..."

Following a heated argument with Democratic leaders at the White House on Tuesday, it has become abundantly clear that Trump faces a tough fight over the next two years on border enforcement.

Mr Trump has asked to include $5bn (£4bn) in the deal for border security. Several aides said they believed restlessness by younger members to move up in leadership would make that hard for her to achieve.

Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that Mexico would still technically pay for the wall, through the additional money the USA will make from the not-yet-ratified United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement.
