Senate approves stopgap spending bill to avoid government shutdown

Lawmakers arrive to the House chamber to vote on the continuing resolution to fund the federal government Capitol Hill

"Now, they need to be looking ahead and realize if you capitulate on this, because Americans, not just Republicans, Americans overall accept we ought to secure the border".

White House aides told USA media President Trump is inclined to sign the measure.

Republican and Democratic leaders earlier on Wednesday gave strong signals that the stopgap, known as a continuing resolution, would pass Congress and head to the president's desk.

A potential deal on Capitol Hill to avert a government shutdown with a short-term spending measure hit a roadblock Thursday as the White House said President Trump "does not want to go further" with anything that does not include sought-after funding for border security. If passed, the seven-week spending bill will allow several key federal government departments to keep operating until February 8, averting a partial shutdown.

Conservatives oppose the bill because it doesn't include billions of dollars for Trump's long-promised border wall with Mexico - a central plank of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

Jones, similarly, told Faulkner that Trump is "letting the Democrats have their way on this issue", adding that "the president is in danger with his base now if he doesn't deliver".

After obstruction by the Democrats, Trump suggested again that he may consider using the US military to build the wall along the southern border.

The president's conservative backers insist that Trump should not back down from his demand for $5 billion from Congress.

As House Republicans tried to head off conservative members' rebellion against the spending bill earlier Thursday, both House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer flatly said Democrats would not approve money for the barrier.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders addressed the government shutdown threat in a briefing Tuesday.

On Twitter, the President made clear his disappointment with the lack of funding for his border wall.

Can Trump Build the Wall Without Approval from Congress?

"We've got to stay here and get this job done and get border security passed", Walker said.

It would be a stretch to say the fencing Schumer supported in 2013 fits the same description as Trump's "impenetrable, physical, tall, power, handsome southern border wall", with "precasts going up probably 35 to 40 feet in the air". "Border Security is National Security, and National Security is the long-term viability of our Country".

Questioning White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, "Fox & Friends" host Brian Kilmeade said the president has "no leverage", while co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked why Trump was "softening" his position.

"If I were in her shoes, I would rather not be dealing with this year's business next year", McConnell said.

Top Democrats hit back on that assessment, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, (D-NY) who criticized the move Wednesday morning on the Senate floor.

Fears of a shutdown, adding to other concerns, sent United States stocks tumbling, with the Dow shedding about two per cent.

Consequently, Trump and House Republicans should act together on the spending bill.

That changed again on Thursday after Mr Trump faced severe criticism from some of his most ardent supporters, who accused him of "caving". They had proposed keeping funding at current levels of $1.3 billion for border security fencing and other improvements but not for the wall.

Trump has demanded $5 billion to build a wall on the southern US border with Mexico, his signature campaign promise.

Congress faces a Friday deadline to fund a portion of the government or risk a partial shutdown.

Many agencies, including the Pentagon and the departments of Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services, are already funded for the year and will continue to operate as usual.
