Trump Begins Withdrawing Troops From Syria

Donald Trump says ISIS has been BEATEN in Middle East – as troops withdrawn | Daily Star

The U.S. first deployed troops to the country in 2015 during the Obama administration as part of a partnership with Kurdish-led ground forces against ISIS.

President Donald Trump's surprise announcement declaring victory over ISIS and withdrawing USA forces from Syria triggered some blistering criticism from members of his own party on Capitol Hill. As the United States has made clear, these developments in Syria do not signal the end of the global coalition or its campaign. He said, "The biggest winners in this are ISIS and Iran".

Trump, who has long sought to withdraw troops, cited the Turkish plans as one reason for his decision to leave Syria, saying that it could pose a danger to United States troops. "In order to have a successful diplomatic outcome, you have to have a military option and a military presence".

The withdrawal of USA troops comes as the US approaches an end of a coalition campaign to recapture territory once controlled by IS. He said that an withdrawal of US forces would also be a boon to America's rivals in the region, including Iran and Russian Federation, as well as the terror group ISIS.

There is no timeline yet for the pace of the withdrawal, the official said. Some were launched from neighboring Iraq, where the USA has over 5,000 troops, according to CNN. Trump, since before taking office, has promised to conclude the campaign against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, and questioned the value of costly and unsafe military missions overseas. "However, withdrawal of our forces in Syria mightily undercuts that effort and put our allies, the Kurds at risk".

Mr. Trump has vowed to bring USA forces home from Syria as soon as the fight against the Islamic State was over.

The U.S. military has repeatedly described its primary goal in Syria as the enduring defeat of ISIS but has also acknowledged that Iran's presence in the country poses a major menace to American interests. The presence of US troops has become "a unsafe obstacle" to peace in the country, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said before the news about the withdrawal broke on Wednesday. The Department of Defense and the bipartisan foreign policy class are infuriated by the decision to withdraw from Syria, but given their failed strategic approach to the region, they only have themselves to blame for the president's decision to end the mission.

The White House said the time-frame for the withdrawal was expected to be between 60 to 100 days as military chiefs wind up the US-led campaign to retake territory once held by Islamist extremists.

Kinzinger, an Air Force veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, tweeted "Iran is rejoicing right now."

The timing of the troop withdrawal was not immediately clear and US officials who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity did not disclose details about the deliberations.

"Any reports indicating a change in the United States position with respect" to the U.S. military presence in Syria "is false and created to sow confusion and chaos", the coalition said in a statement. "If the Americans really do pull their troops out, I think that would only help stabilize the situation in Syria", Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy chairman of the worldwide affairs committee in the upper house of Russia's parliament, said, according to the Interfax news service.

Trump's decision immediately garnered criticism from hawks within his own party.
