United Kingdom disarray: May to face no-confidence vote from her party

The no-confidence vote has been initiated by anti-EU lawmakers.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has survived a vote of confidence triggered by MPs of her ruling Conservative Party.

Ahead of the vote, the Prime Minister said she would fight the vote "with everything I've got".

The results of the vote will be announced at 9 p.m.

"Her opening remarks were 'I am not going to hold a snap election", Mr Shelbrooke said.

If she does not win the vote there would then be a Conservative leadership contest in which she could not stand.

Both May's ruling Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party have pledged to implement the results of the 2016 referendum in which British voters backed exiting the European Union 52 percent to 48 percent.

On Monday, May pulled a parliamentary vote on her widely maligned Brexit deal with the European Union, acknowledging it would have been defeated by members of the Commons.

The vote, triggered amid ongoing divisions over her Brexit deal, takes place in the form of a secret ballot on Wednesday evening.

Backbencher Anna Soubry said it was time for the prime minister to face down hardline Brexiters on the right of her party.

The leadership challenge marked an eruption of the Conservative Party's decades-long divide over Europe and threw Britain's already rocky path out of the European Union, which it is due to leave on March 29, into further chaos. If she loses the vote, the 1922 Committee would set out a timetable for a contest.

Gove said he backed May in the confidence vote.

May announced on Monday that it had become clear her deal would not be passed in Parliament and so she would return to Europe to seek further concessions - which many European leaders have warned is not possible.

Brexit is Britain's most significant political and economic decision since World War Two.

She said: "A change of leadership in the Conservative Party now would put our country's future at risk".

She did not say what she will do if, as many expect, there is an early United Kingdom election triggered by Britain's Brexit crisis.

The last general election was in June 2017, and the next one is scheduled to be held no later than May 5, 2022. Two members who were under party suspension for alleged misconduct prior to Wednesday were permitted to vote in the ballot.

"The deal that we have achieved is the best deal possible, it is the only deal possible", he reiterated.

"A new leader wouldn't have time to renegotiate a withdrawal agreement and get the legislation through Parliament by March 29".

And if May's plan falls, it's likely she will too - either at the hands of her own Conservative Party or with her government in a no-confidence vote that would trigger a national election.

So far, 174 Tory MPs have publicly said they will vote for her, with 34 publicly against, according to BBC research.

May cancelled a Wednesday trip to Dublin to meet Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar so she could stay in London and battle for lawmakers' support.

Prospective leadership contenders are former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, home secretary Sajid Javid, and global development secretary Penny Mordaunt.

Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator, expressed his disbelief at the political chaos engulfing Westminster. "The prime minister must realize that, under all constitutional norms, she ought to go and see the queen urgently and resign".

But she told Parliament on Monday "there will be no enduring and successful Brexit without some compromise on both sides of the debate".
