Barr: Mueller wouldn't be involved in a 'witch hunt'

Trump Attorney General Nominee William Barr Says He Won't Interfere With Robert Mueller Investigation

WASHINGTON ― William Barr, the once and likely future attorney general, told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee at his confirmation hearing on Tuesday that he doesn't believe Robert Mueller "would be involved in a witch hunt" and pledged to act with independence and not fire the special counsel without due cause. He also repeatedly sought to assuage concerns that he might disturb or upend special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation as it reaches its final stages.

Barr's testimony is being closely watched because he would assume oversight of the Mueller probe at a critical time - and because of his unsolicited memo that went after the probe and questioned its foray into potential obstruction of justice. Mueller headed the department's criminal division while Barr served as attorney general from 1991 to 1993.

"We've got a lot of problems at the Department of Justice", Graham said.

Barr's nomination has broad support from most Senate Republicans.

"There's no question he's the next attorney general", Spicer said.

Donald Trump's nominee for attorney-general today said he did not believe that the investigation into Russian election interference was a "witch hunt", as the president has claimed. Barr, as head of the Justice Department, would take over from acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker and oversee Mueller's work.

"The American people deserve an attorney general who will prioritize their best interests and uphold the rule of law", says Fredrickson.

Clinton, the former Democratic presidential nominee, jumped on the latest revelations, tweeting debate footage from 2016 in which she blasted Trump for bending to Putin's will and writing: "Like I said: A puppet".

That's according to a copy of William Barr's prepared remarks for his confirmation hearing Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Barr will tell lawmakers that he believes it is important that Congress and the public are informed of his results. Lawmakers are questioning his views on the Special Counsel's Russian Federation investigation, whether a sitting president can be indicted, and other matters. Rosenstein did not respond and was "sphinx-like", Barr recalled.

"I am going to do what I think is right".

He said he followed up with a memo to Rosenstein in June that argued that Mueller should not be able to interview the president about his decision to fire James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director. In addition to discussing his memo with Trump's personal attorneys, Barr also shared or discussed it with Kushner's lawyer.

The special counsel is required to report his findings confidentially to the Justice Department. Barr stopped short of directly pledging to release Mueller's report but expressed general support for disclosing the findings.

"My goal will be to provide as much transparency as I can consistent with the law", he said. He said presidents can not be criminally investigated for actions they are permitted to take under the Constitution, such as firing officials who work for them, just because of a subjective determination that they may have had a corrupt state of mind.

But Barr's comments are unlikely to satisfy Democratic demands for what Dick Durbin of IL, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat, on Sunday called "ironclad, rock-bottom assurances" that Barr wouldn't interfere with Mueller's work.
